    Education is at the core of empowerment because knowledge…is POWER.

     

    Part of feeling empowered is directly related to how knowledgeable we feel. This year, I will be sharing with you one book each week that has empowerment at its core. The genres will vary from things like self-development to health and beauty products to mindset to business/entrepreneurship to lifestyle and exercise and many others.

     

    Sometimes we can feel empowered in one area of our life, but not other areas. The variety I will be sharing will help you tap into other areas, increase your knowledge, and fuel your empowerment.

     

    I’ll use this blog as the main spot for listing the books and I’ll update it each week with that week’s recommendation. I hope some of them tickle your fancy and I hope the ones you choose to read are truly helpful for you.

    No more stinky underarms - naturally.

     

    If you’ve ever had “nervous” sweat, you are well aware of the putrid stench that billows out from under your arms, polluting the air around you. It’s all you can smell and you KNOW everyone around you can smell it…smell YOU. And all you want to do is hide in the bathroom.

     

    Oh, yes, I know this all too well.

     

    I was always a nervous kid. And ever since I can remember, my underarms have smelled like 14-day old meatloaf rotting in the Sahara Desert. Peeeewwww!!!

     

    When I was young, I used baby powder, hoping the sweet scent would camouflage my smell; it didn’t. As I got older, I bought into the advertising and used a popular deodorant/antiperspirant, at the time touting the highest percentage of aluminum to prevent odor. This was before I started educating myself on the toxins in many of our health and beauty products.

     

    At one point, I even got electrolysis on my underarms thinking it must be the hair causing my stink. While I LOVE never having to shave my underarms, the stench persisted.

     

    I was well into my thirties before I really started paying more attention to and researching the ingredients in the products I was using and slathering all over my skin.

     

    Now, you can find pretty much anything you want on the Internet. You can find evidence to support just about any side of any debate. What resonates with you will be what you choose to believe. For me, I try not to be an extremist, but rather to be informed and make the best choice possible for me based on what I choose to believe.

     

    Whether aluminum is directly connected to Alzheimer’s disease or not, whether parabens (often in deodorants) are directly connected to breast cancer or not, these are not things I want absorbing into my body on a daily basis. This is my personal choice. There’s a good bit of breast cancer in my family and I’d like to help my tatas stay healthy. 🙂

     

    If you’re looking for a healthier alternative for your deodorant, I’m sharing with you here some of my discoveries. If you decide to try them, I hope they work well for you.

     

    Natural Deodorants

     

    Option 3: Schmidt’s Deodorant Stick

    Schmidts Natural Deoderant Fragrance Free

    For me, this is option 3 because it didn’t do much to stop the rotting smell of my underarms. If you do NOT struggle with nervous sweat, this may be a good option for you. They have a variety of scents as well as unscented. Free of aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens, and phthalates. Gluten-free. Certified Vegan and cruelty-free. You can find it HERE.

     

    Option 2: Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant

    Lavanila The Healthy Deoderant

    I like the soft scent of the vanilla lavender. They have a variety of scents, including a fragrance free one for those who are super sensitive (LINK). It works well to address my overly stinky underarms. I have it ranked number two because it doesn’t work long enough for me and my body chemistry. I had to wash my underarms midday and reapply it.

     

    This is also a good option if you do not struggle with the smell of nervous sweat or if you don’t mind reapplying during the day. No aluminum. No parabens. All-natural ingredients. No harsh chemicals. Not tested on animals. No: petrochemicals, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oils, silicone, synthetic dyes, sulfates, or parabens. You can find it HERE.

     

    Option 1: NATIVE DEODORANT

    NATIVE Deodorant

    This deodorant has worked best for me. They have a variety of scents, including unscented. I like the gentle scent of coconut & vanilla.

     

    In my crazy life of 10-12 hour corporate workdays followed by 2-3 hours a day on my business, ladies, I confess…there are days (sometimes 3 in a row) where I simply don’t have time to shower. Yup, I wrote it, you read it. Basically, I am marinating in my own juices! Fess up, I know I’m not alone. While it grosses me out, it is a reality sometimes (thankfully not very often). And during that time, this deodorant has NOT failed me. It has kept my horrific stench AWAY! 🙂

     

    The only thing I don’t care for is the slight overflow of product on the rim of the stick. When I put the lid back on, it then squeezes that overflow down so it gets on my hands when removing and replacing the lid. I’m a bit of a clean-freak so I wipe it after every use.

    A couple of things to note:

    1) These are natural deodorants and not organic. They do not have the USDA organic seal. I remain on the hunt for an organic one that I like and that works for me and my body chemistry (aka stinky underarms!). If I find one, you can be sure I’ll share it.

     

    2) These are all deodorants ONLY and NOT antiperspirants. So, they will help with odor, but they will not prevent you from sweating. Our bodies are meant to sweat. Stopping that natural process is not a good idea. Aside from keeping our body temperature regulated by cooling us down when needed, sweating helps us to expel toxins, thus supporting proper immune function and helping to prevent diseases related to toxic overload.

     

    3) I also have yet to find a deodorant that doesn’t leave white residue on the underarms of my clothing.

    Beauty Products - Does Organic Matter?

    This week, I had two friends experience breast cancer scares. Both of them found a lump in their breasts. And while Emerge Empowerment is about business, at its core, it is about empowerment. And do I want to remind everyone that what we put ONto our bodies is just as important as what we put INto our bodies. Hearing just a bit about each of their stories touched my heart and I felt compelled to write today’s blog.

     

    By now, most of you know that I have had cystic acne since I was in my early twenties. If you haven’t yet watched my first-ever YouTube video where I talk about my skin issues, you can check it out by clicking HERE. And if any of you have ever had skin issues of any kind, you KNOW the physical pain and emotional embarrassment that comes with them. Your confidence suffers, you want to hide, and you surely are NOT feeling empowered.

     

    Since the onset of my acne, I tried so many different possible solutions, both topical and oral. If there was a cream I could slather on, I slathered. A masque, slap it on me. Toothpaste on my pimple to dry it up, why not?? That one left a scar…I don’t recommend it. Oh, the systems and washes I tried. From Proactive (twice) to the plethora of options from Hollywood’s beautiful women, I ordered it and used it. Even though they didn’t all promise to crush my acne, I hoped they might help. Nothing did.

     

    Off to the dermatologist I went for more salves and lotions…AND, pharmaceuticals. I’ve been on probably most of the antibiotic options (tetracycline, minocin, etc.), birth control, Accutane (twice), some stinky Sulphur pill, and anything they recommended. So many drugs into my body for so many years.

     

     

    Nothing helped…at least nothing long term.

     

    Most recently, for the past 6-7 years, I was on spironolactone. It was the only thing I found that worked well and long term. My skin was…finally…normal. I even received compliments and was stunned every time. Still, it was a drug. And the more I learn about my body and what I put into it, the more I decided it was time to be DONE with drugs just to have normal skin. I knew the medicine was impacting my body in other ways…why else would I need to get bloodwork done every so often? Yikes!!

     

    While sitting in a doctor’s office one morning perusing a magazine, I happened across an article where the author’s story very closely mirrored my own. She went completely off of dairy and high glycemic foods. I had stopped most dairy long ago because it upsets my stomach and it isn’t all that good for you. So, cutting out the cheese I ate occasionally wasn’t a big deal. I try to eat pretty healthy so didn’t eat many high glycemic foods; again, not difficult to cut them out entirely. So, off I went to try my new “diet.”

     

    I weaned off of my medicine as I made the dietary changes. After about three months…my skin was still clear!!!!

     

    Hooray!!!!

     

    At about month four…pop, pop-pop, pop-pop-pop…back came the pepperoni-face. My heart sank. The pimples were painful, I felt ugly, and I didn’t want to be seen.

     

    At the age of 46, I thought, this HAS to be hormonal. Come on, I have wrinkles already! Can I just deal with one OR the other?! J And so my journey led me to a holistic gynecologist.

     

    As I’ve gotten older, I have started researching more about the holistic world and learning so much about the toxins and chemicals that are not only in the foods we eat, but also in our health and beauty products. So, it was important to me to find a holistic approach to dealing with my acne. Our plan is to address my digestive issues and my doctor believes I may see an improvement in my skin with a reduction of the acne. And onward I go with my journey. I’m taking a probiotic and a holistic supplement called Berberine to help heal my “gut,” as the doctor’s like to refer to it. Every now and again, I’ll share with you my updates…good or bad.

     

    Alongside of my skin journey, I continue to explore and research more about what we put ONTO our bodies being just as important as what we put INTO our bodies.

     

    Have you ever read the label on some of your health and beauty products? I know, who has time for that? I never used to be a label-reader…until now. Let me help you out, there are tons of ingredients listed that you can’t even pronounce that are basically harsh chemicals and other toxins. Scary, huh? There is breast cancer in my family so I have a heightened awareness of parabens in the products I use. Click on the link below to see some research I did on my own that you may find useful.

     

    Paraben, Mineral Oils, Petrolatum

     

    After looking at the ingredients in some of the products I used regularly and learning about their hazardous impact on my body, I was, quite frankly, terrified. Now, don’t freak out and start throwing away all your products to run out and buy new ones…you’ll go broke! But, DO educate yourself.

     

     

    Run some of your products through the Think Dirty app. This app is amazingly informative! And they are partnered with the Breast Cancer Fund so I don’t feel like I’m being duped by any particular brand that might be paying them to advertise. In the app, you can scan a bar code to see that item or enter a brand name and it will show you products by that brand. It will also give a rating: 0-3 is green meaning pretty clean, 4-7 is yellow meaning it’s in the middle of clean and dirty, and 8-10 is red meaning…dirrrrrrrTY!!! When you find a product you use and see that it’s yellow or red, you can click on “Our Picks” and they provide options in the green category for you to consider. The “Dirty Meter” will show you a scale of three measurements: 1) carcinogenicity, 2) developmental & reproductive toxicity, and 3) allergies & immunotoxicities. Clicking on “Ingredients,” will show you what ingredients are impacting the Dirty Meter scale. Some very interesting information can be learned on these tabs.

     

    I have chosen to go organic with my health and beauty products. It’s a choice I made because I want to live healthier and not have toxic chemicals absorb into my skin causing who knows what health problems. I haven’t jumped on the crazy-train and you don’t have to either. As products you currently use run out, simply see if there’s something else you can replace it with that’s less harmful and non-toxic.

     

    It has taken some time to find products I like that work well for me, but I have. One line I love is Juice Beauty.

     

     

    It has the USDA Organic seal and that makes me feel like I’m using some pretty safe products. While the certification to be considered “organic” in the United States isn’t as stringent or restrictive as it is in other parts of the world, I still feel good that they have gone through this important process.

     

     

    I will admit that I don’t care for all of the products in Juice Beauty’s line. As you now know, I have difficult skin and some of the products simply don’t agree with my skin type. But, I do love the products that I’ve found that work well for me. And, while I can’t guarantee they’ll work for you, I can guarantee they’re at least worth a try.

    When we educate ourselves, we are empowered. And when we are empowered, we make better decisions for our health and our lives. Do some research for yourself and use the information you find helpful. Small changes can make big differences in our lives.

    Entrepreneurship The Physical Torture and Honoring Your Body

    The mind-body connection is so much more powerful than most of us realize. And for those of us who do know how powerful it is, we may not be consciously aware as often as we should.

     

    When we embark on entrepreneurship while still working our corporate jobs, it’s usually because something inside us desires more. We have this yearning and know we’re meant for something bigger in life. To make an impact in some way. To make a difference in someone’s life. We often don’t feel as though we’re truly helping people in the corporate world. Some of us have knowledge and wisdom from life experiences. Some of us get certifications in things we’re passionate about. And most of us are bursting with ideas and a desire to truly help people.

     

    So we jump into the online world energized and excited! We usually take it somewhat slow and steady as we learn and try to figure out our way in the online space. We have our steady paychecks and whether we loathe our jobs or are we don’t, but still want to dabble in the world of entrepreneurship, we often cling to the safety and security of what our corporate jobs provide (401K, pension, benefits, stock options, etc.), at least for a little while.

     

    What tends to happen is that we start getting up early or staying up late or using our lunch time to work on our side business. Trying to figure out all the pieces and how they fit together and what the best order of progression is becomes overwhelming. And so we get up even earlier and stay up even later. And because many of us are driven and motivated, we push ourselves and push ourselves.

     

    We work harder and longer. We research and research trying to digest the unending amounts of data and information out there. We are relentless in our pursuit to improve our lives and the lives of others.

     

    Here is what begins to happen:

    • Exhaustion starts to set in.
    • We may even feed our bodies with processed, on-the-fly foods because we need to eat quickly and keep going.
    • We’re constantly on fast-forward, trying to keep up with our jobs, our business, and our lives.
    • Our sleep becomes shallow, restless, and interrupted.
    • We likely let go of exercising because there “isn’t enough time” to fit it in with all we’re trying to accomplish.
    • We lose focus frequently.
    • Our heads feel like they’re in a fog.
    • We get frustrated easily.
    • We may even start to wonder why we’re doing this side business…and can we even do it.
    • Our passion douses, our creativity becomes cluttered, our energy is drained, and our desire fades.

     

    And down the spiral we go.

     

    This stimulates the doubts, fears, and negative stories that are deeply seated in our minds and inflames old pain and unhappiness in our souls. A chain reaction occurs sending our bodies into fight-or-flight mode, putting us into a state of stress and anxiety. And when we are in this state, here are the types of things that happen in our bodies:

    • Our immune system becomes suppressed and our chances of getting sick increase.
    • Our kidneys and adrenals release cortisol and adrenaline.
    • Our estrogen and progesterone production is halted, which signals more testosterone for fight-or-flight.
    • Our thyroid glands pretty much shut down.
    • We may experience heart palpitations or shortness of breath.
    • Our gut becomes acidic and the good bacteria die.
    • Our body fluids become acidic because our kidneys are busy in fight-or-flight mode and the filtering process is slowed.
    • The production of eggs in our ovaries is slowed or even stopped because our bodies have become acidic.
    • Our periods can become erratic or heavy because we are mineral-deficient.
    • We can experience painful cramps, excessive blood clots, back pain, and headaches.

     

    Whew! And these are just some of the physical impacts and torture that stress pounds on our bodies.

     

    From your point of reading this blog forward, I want you to make a promise to yourself to honor your body and its powerful connection with your mind and thoughts. Make a point every day to manage your stress and anxiety in healthy and positive ways.

     

    Make self-care a priority instead of putting it on the back burner. Give yourself permission to slow down and breathe. Here is a list of things you can do:

    • Get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
    • Be sure you’re eating fresh, healthy foods. I’ve gone mostly organic and I feel great!
    • Practice yoga or meditation. If you really feel that you don’t have the time for it on a daily basis, try to do it once a week.
    • Say mantras and positive affirmations. You can do this anytime, anywhere.
    • Listen to your body and rest when it tells you to.
    • Take a calming, soothing bath once a week if you can.
    • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
    • When you feel that brain-fog set in, stop, step away, and take a short walk.

     

    We are in control of our thoughts and our actions. To put yourself in the best possible position for building a successful, thriving business and life you love, you must take care of yourself.

     

    We can’t stop stress from occurring, but we CAN manage it in a healthy, positive way.

    Small, focused steps can lead to big, empowered impact.

     

    Our world is full of stress, we are riddled with anxiety, and our pace is often in a constant state of fast-forward such that quieting our minds at the end of each day seems unattainable. And wrapped up in all of this negative energy, our health and our happiness suffer.
    As defined on Reiki.org, “Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.”

    The 5 principles of Reiki

    Just for today, do not be angry

    Just for today, do not worry

    Just for today, be grateful

    Just for today, work hard

    Just for today, be kind to others.

     

    I love the snarky Facebook posts from parents about laundry and yoga pants and wine and making it until bedtime. Their irony and sarcasm make me laugh and hit close to home. But if I sit and think about it enough, they also make me feel so sad because these hilarious quotes and memes are many times based in a cynicism which roots deep. This can bring one to wonder how they can survive another day in the hamster wheel of life where you are just struggling to keep your chin above water let alone keep your house clean and survive until bedtime. This became more apparent to me after my first Reiki attunement.

     

    There were several emotions stirred up in me during that weekend which caused me to evaluate several aspects of my life from a new perspective. I especially identified with the 5 principles of Reiki because they were familiar to me from my religious upbringing. When I was considering ways in which I could bring Reiki with me into my everyday life, I realized that I could infuse the 5 principles into my routine and, in turn, reap great results. By focusing on loving myself and loving others, I know great achievements are made.

     

    So what if, instead of focusing on the hamster wheel cynicism of the daily grind, I focused on infusing the 5 principles? Don’t get me wrong, I identify with the snarky posts. But I was open and willing to take an honest look at how I was spending my energy in speaking about my life. Words carry so much more weight than we realize many times.

     

    For example, instead of saying “I can’t wait until the kids go to bed” I would say “I am so grateful for this full day even with its challenges and even though I’m exhausted from living this day so well.”

     

    The change in focus from making it to bedtime (not focusing on the present) to feeling tired from living so well (gratitude for a full life) shifts perspective. It seems so small. But when mindfulness is placed on tone and your words are intentionally focused on gratitude and love and kindness, larger shifts begin to occur.

     

    My husband and I both work, he at a crunching-numbers desk job and me as a night shift ICU nurse. We are also raising three beautiful young children. In the middle of all this we are working to meet all of the usual standards of taking care of each other, taking care of our marriage, making sure our kids are getting the right nutrition from the right things and that they are in the right activities, attending to our faith, working out, eating properly, etc. etc. etc. No pressure, right? Right. This is where the challenge started for me.

     

    “Just for today.” How am I supposed to manage the schedule of a family of five “just for today?” I like to plan. And not only just plan, manage every detail. With that detailed focus, however, comes some other tendencies. Tendencies to rehash things that were said or worry about what could possibly go wrong. This form of anxiety, Type-A, organized—whatever you want to call it to soften the label—feels like it has been a part of me for my entire life. So living just for today, in moments, with gratitude is something that I work on every day. Some days I crush it and some days not so much. Some days it is easy to be present, be slow to anger, let go of worry and control, be grateful, not complain about working hard and be kind to others. And other days I fail miserably.

     

    What I have learned over my first year of being a Reiki practitioner is that we are all learning this process. Many of us want to have these principles come easy to us every day and this is where change occurs. The realization of this desire and the mindfulness to keep the principles in the forefront of our busy, overworked, multitasking minds is where positive change is birthed.

     

    When you tack on the “just for today” at the start of the precept, it does take some pressure off. It doesn’t say “don’t ever worry.” Just start with today. And some days I will change it to “Just for the next hour, do not worry” or “Until lunch, be grateful.” Some days this is all one can do. Take the day in steps. This is the way to change mindset over time. It eventually becomes easier to release old ways of thinking and old habits and patterns. While saying “I’ve always been this way” is certainly a safe reason to justify ways of thinking, it doesn’t mean change is impossible.

     

    Small steps in manipulating and breaking thought patterns will eventually lead to bigger changes. If you can break the cycle of anxious, angry, ungrateful thoughts even just once you become that much stronger than the pattern. Over time, it will become easier and easier to break the cycle and you will gain a better sense of control of the “ways you have always been.” This is certainly possible and I can say that because I have done it in my own life.

     

    So maybe start today. Actually, definitely start today. Choose one little principle and make it your mantra for the day, for the week. Maybe just start with an hour. Wherever you start is perfect because this journey of mindfulness and gratitude and love will sweep you off your feet eventually and before you know it things will appear radically different. The once mundane and seemingly insignificant appear magnificent. No, it will not be a perfect journey. There are days when I lay in bed beating myself up over how I could have done things differently that day. But those times are becoming less and less common. Those thoughts linger for shorter periods of time. And I realize that the implementation and focus on these precepts has brought great positive change for myself and those around me.

     

    The ripple effect of this type of change—based in love—is where major change starts. Begin today by promising to love others and yourself. Sprinkle in some gratitude. Release worry and fear and anger and see beauty in the daily grind. You are worth it, dear one.

    1.       Mentally and physically cleanse to create the space within and really soak up the goodness of your family and achievements. I find a cleansing nutrition program is fantastic for cleansing my body, work, desk, and mind.
    2.       Balance – work, life, diet, wellbeing, exercise, friends. I love yoga for feeling grounded and balanced.
    3.       Inspire, create, and empower yourself daily.
    4.       Regularly throughout the day, practice diaphragmatic breathing.
    5.       Exercise to allow your body to do what it loves doing – moving.
    6.       Get involved and properly play with your kids on their level.
    7.       Drop all expectations and judgment of yourself and others.
    8.       Tune in and be grateful for something every day.
    9.       Load up on green salads, veggies, healthy fats, and good quality protein to nourish your body.
    10.   Surround yourself with people who uplift, support, and empower you to live to your truest and fullest potential.

  • Touching a Life Touching a Life

    As an entrepreneur, you dive into your business; head first, feet first, whatever…you just dive. You have a passion burning inside of you and a message you want to share. You’re filled with energy and ideas and goals and dreams. And you know you can make a difference in this world.

    I have found that most of us truly want to help people. And helping people is pretty broad. So, you set a goal, make a plan, and strategize how to get there. You make lists and hone in on what you really want to do and who your audience is. You think about what your business will look like. Will it be strictly E-commerce? Or do you want a brick-and-mortar facility? You think about your brand and what you want to stand for; how people feel when they think of you and your business. You create a logo and get business cards. You create profiles on social media and start interacting with your following.

     

     

    There is a lot to think about when you’re first starting out. And if you don’t already know people who have done what you’re trying to do, gosh, is it overwhelming. If you’re lucky enough, you stumble across an amazing coach or two who help you find your way. And even then, there’s so much to do and learn.

    At times, you may get hit with that awful misperception called fear. And that dreaded self-doubt creeps in. You become apprehensive and begin to wonder if you can even do this. You question yourself, “What was I thinking? I can’t do this!” A day or two goes by and you feel your power again, “Other women are doing it. They’re not smarter than me. They’re not better than me. I can do this!” A few hours go by or even a few more days. Maybe you’re struggling to get your website up. Those self-deprecating thoughts rear their ugly heads again. The emotions can be quite intense. And if you don’t have a support-system on your side, failure may consume and destroy you. For me, the juggling of my corporate job with trying to start up my Emerge business has me in a constant state of teeter-tottering between, “I’m out of my mind, I can’t do this!” and “This is what I’m meant to do. I can so do this!”

    Determined to succeed and do work that you love and has value and gives you a sense of purpose, you forge ahead. You create content you hope will resonate with people and help build your tribe. You interact on all of your social media and wonder if anyone is even reading what you’re posting. Maybe you even get a “Like” on Facebook or Instagram or perhaps a “Share” on Twitter. But then, you think, “What does that really mean?”

     

    I was spiraling around in all
    of this like a tornado.

     

    And then one day, I received a “Like” on one of my Twitter posts. I sent a message to thank the young lady for liking my Tweet. To my surprise, she messaged me back to thank me for my uplifting posts. She let me know that she looks forward to them and that reading my “encouraging messages has transformed me for the better!” Well, my mouth dropped open.

    We then exchanged messages back and forth where I learned more about her and she shared some background on her life to explain why she was so impacted by my posts. She shared with me a video of her speech called, Life’s Choices, that she now presents to students around the country. After watching her video and being honored that she shared it with me, I then understood the impact of my words on her.


    And I cried.

     

    I cried deep and hard. I couldn’t contain it. I had touched a life. I…me…had made a positive impact on a delicate soul who values my messages. My chest convulsed as tears poured out and my heart was filled with pure joy and the knowledge that I can make a difference. I sit here with moisture sweeping my eyes as I write this. This incredible woman had created a defining moment for me. A moment that told me, without a doubt, I am absolutely on the right path and I can make my business successful and truly help women.

    To my entrepreneurial friends out there, NEVER EVER give up. You have a message, you have a purpose, and there are so many people’s lives to touch. Power on. If your moment hasn’t happened yet, have faith, it will.

    Self-Care in Our Hurried and Chaotic Lives

     

    When thinking about what I wanted my empowerment business to do for women, I settled on two main aspects: education and self-care. Personally, I always want to be learning and I stink at self-care. I’m discovering just how essential self-care is. I’m also learning that I’m not the only woman who stinks at it.

    Most women know that when we are depleted, we are not at our best. We also know that we want to be functioning at an optimal level to best care for those we love who need us. Yet somehow, regardless of this knowledge, we do NOT take care of ourselves.

    When we know how important self-care is, why are we not taking care of ourselves? Do we not love ourselves? Is it some kind of twisted self-sabotage? Do we feel we are we not worth it? Hopefully none of these are true, but there are certainly many reasons we don’t self-care. What I found in my own life and learned in conversations with friends is that not taking care of ourselves most often comes down to time.

     

     

    Women have taken on more and more in recent years. And, as more of us go into the workforce and build businesses, the traditional “female” responsibilities of the “olden days” have not gone away. Taking care of the kids, cooking meals, doing household chores, running errands…and so much more…all still need to get done. And, typically (not always, but typically), these responsibilities still fall on us in addition to our careers. So yes, self-care is the first thing that gets put on the back burner and likely never even makes it onto the to-do list because really, who has the time? Keeping in mind these extraordinary demands and pace of our hurried lives, I searched for self-care options I can recommend to you that are both time-efficient and empowering.

    What I found; however, were a lot of self-care suggestions that involve spending time and money; two things many of us are short on…which is why we don’t do it. I found things like 90-minute massages, hour-long sauna sessions, going for a long walk in nature, getting together with a girlfriend for a mani-pedi, and so many other ways to take care of ourselves. I won’t lie, these sound absolutely fabulous…but, I simply don’t have the time to do them and I suspect many of you are in my boat with me.

    So does this mean, that we will never self-care? No. I thought about ways we can use time to our advantage and work self-care into minutes here and minutes there. Those minutes add up and can have tremendous impact.

     

     

    Self-care doesn’t have to be huge chunk of planned time doing a specific activity. Make it part of your daily, chaotic life. We sit at traffic lights, we stand in lines, we walk here and there doing the things we need to do. Rather than just go-through-the-motions…be aware of your thoughts, be present…notice what’s around you.

    Here are some examples from my life…

    1. When I walk to the mailbox to get the mail, I say my mantra to myself, “I am strong, I am happy, and I have no fears. I am whole and complete within myself.” I have to walk to the mailbox anyway so instead of letting thoughts of my dreadful corporate job cloud my mind, for those few minutes, I fill my mind with positive words and I actually feel better by the time I get back to the house.
    2. When I’m standing in line at the grocery store, I focus on my breathing. It is rapid? Am I holding my breath? I focus on it. And I change it. I do some yoga breathing. I can’t do much else, I’m standing in a line. What better time to take a moment and do some healthy breathing. If I like the earrings on the girl in front of me, I’ll let her know. Not only have I made her smile and feel good about herself, I’ve made myself feel good as well.
    3. There are days when I’m on back-to-back conference calls for six (yes, SIX) hours. (And, yes, there are times when I’m in the bathroom while on these calls because, come on folks, a girl has to tinkle!) Occasionally, a call will end five minutes early…YES! I spin around in my chair (away from my three computer monitors), close my eyes, and visualize the one time I was in a mineral pool. I remember the smoothness of the water on my skin, the quiet puddling of it as I moved slowly through it, and the peacefulness in my ears. I allow myself to recall all the calming sensations of that tranquil experience. And then I dash to tinkle before the next call starts. Okay, it’s only like three minutes, but…it’s three minutes I give to myself to become fully absorbed into self-care.

    While Ellen lists some of the expected items that involve a commitment of time and money, she also includes items that only require the power of our minds or tap into things we’re already doing in our lives. Here are some of my favorites:

    • Scratch off a lurker on your to-do list, something that’s been there for ages and you’ll never do.
    • Make one small change to your diet for the week. Drink an extra glass of water each day, or have an extra portion of veggies each meal.
    • Check in with your emotions. Sit quietly and just name without judgment what you’re feeling.

    Self-care can be as simple as being mindful and fully present. Our mind is a powerful and amazing tool. We need to tap into it more frequently. Recognize negative thoughts or feelings and consciously, mindfully replace them with thoughts that are positively-charged and make you feel good.

    We’re in the midst of winter. A time to hibernate, go within, and make a plan for emergence in the spring. This is the perfect time to self-reflect and focus on you.

    Mindfulness

    We seem to hear the term, “mindfulness” more and more recently. What exactly is mindfulness though? Wikipedia defines mindfulness as “the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through the practice of meditation and other training.” Dictionary.com defines mindfulness as, “a technique in which one focuses one’s full attention only on the present, experiencing thoughts, feelings, and sensations, but not judging them.”

    Okay, so what really does that mean for each of us? Our lives are hurried and chaotic. We multitask and our minds race forward to the next thing that needs to get done. Who has time to stop…and think about the present moment? And even if we find or make the time, how do we do mindfulness? What does it even look like?

     

     

    Mindfulness is a practice that can be done anytime and anywhere…and for however much or little time you have. Because the tool is your mind, it’s actually quite simple. Be fully present and aware of yourself, your thoughts, your feelings. It is important to note that you should not judge yourself if what you feel and think is negative. The point is to simply acknowledge it for what it is and be present.

    Self-Care

    Mindfulness feeds beautifully into self-care. And, I often find the same mindset occurs with self-care and mindfulness, with the biggest question usually being, “Who has the time?!”

     

     

    Women are doers. We go, we do, we run, we work, we take care of the family, we do the chores, we cook the meals…and the list goes on. When we finally look at (because we may not actually get to) the bottom of the to-do list, taking care of ourselves is usually not even on the list. Many of us will even knowingly admit that we realize we are better able to care for our families when we have taken care of ourselves. The problem is, we DON’T actually do anything about taking care of ourselves.

    When we neglect self-care, the impact can be quite devastating…and we often don’t even recognize it. Here is what can end up happening…

    • We feel anger and frustration more easily.
    • Our bodies get rundown and fatigued.
    • Our minds can feel frantic and overwhelmed.
    • Our mood can become anxious and infuriated.
    • Our temperament can be impatient.
    • We may even be stricken with a numbness in our emotions because we are so overwhelmed.
    • Or worse…

    Clearly, this is an unhealthy and unhappy existence. Life is much too short to live in such a destructive disposition.

    When we go back to the question, “Who has the time?!” it’s instinctively clear to see that we had better start making the time.

    Personally, I had always thought that self-care meant spending time and money (neither of which I have) taking a day off and getting pampered at a spa. Um, yeah, so not happening. What I have come to learn; however, is that self-care does not have to be some grand gesture. Self-care can happen in minutes here and minutes there.

    And, bottom line ladies…self-care is crucial.

    Empowerment comes from both education and self-care. And when we are empowered, life becomes incredible and we make better decisions for ourselves. We have clarity to our thoughts, our bodies are filled with energy, we remember to be grateful, love feels more intense, and we learn to allow happiness to both fill us and exude from us. What a magnificent way to live life!

  • Financial Disaster - There is Hope Financial Disaster – There is Hope

     

    When I was a little girl, I was taken shopping and told I could try on a few outfits to then pick out one we would buy. Delighted and excited, I tried them all on and narrowed my preferences down to two that I wanted help with the final decision. I don’t recall what happened, but I remember leaving the store with nothing. I do, however, remember feeling sad and not worth the price of one outfit.

    Years passed and I graduated from college and got my first real job. I had nothing appropriate to wear as my clothes were all college clothes. I was offered again to be taken shopping. With a conservative approach, I selected versatile items like a black sheath dress, a black blazer, a skirt, a sweater (on sale for only $20.00!!) and two tops. Before popping out of the fitting room, I surveyed my selections. Practical, can be mixed and matched…a good start. When I emerged from the fitting room and showed what I had settled on, she took the $20.00 sweater and said, “I’ll get you this one.”

    A hammer smashed my chest. I can afford the $20.00 sweater! Needless to say, my self-worth took yet another of many blows.

    Finally on my own in the world with a job and a credit card, I felt free! If I wanted something…I bought it! I didn’t need anyone’s approval. And I didn’t need anyone to make me feel worthy. I was going to buy whatever I wanted!!!

    And, boy, did I.


    And so the debt grew…and grew…and GREW…for over 25 years. I was drowning. And somehow, no matter how much I spent or what I spent it on, my self-worth didn’t grow. All that had happened, was that I had become a financial disaster.

    Not only was I a financial disaster, I thoroughly and deeply despised my job. Sixteen years in, I dreaded waking up each morning with my heart racing, unattainable deadlines, and hundreds of unanswered emails. The stress and anxiety became overwhelming…almost paralyzing.

    Knowing I was meant for more in this life, something valuable and meaningful…a purpose, the concept of Emerge Empowerment was born. A fire ignited inside me as I imagined this incredible company I would build and how I would help women learn how to empower themselves…something I didn’t even feel in my own life. I wanted to be empowered and teach other women how to find their power, their voice, their value…to let them know they matter. My passion grew by the day.


    But how in the world was I going to create a business with a mountain of debt towering over me and trapping me into the job and life I so loathed?!

     

    Thankfully, my life-path, through connections I made with Emerge, led me to a woman who is now my Financial Coach. Together, we dug into ALL of my finances and she asked me questions for which I had NO answers. She guided me and I found the answers. We reviewed things from my debt to my Living Will to my 401K to my pension to my health benefits to my life insurance and my car insurance…all of it! My financial life splattered out before me. She helped me figure out where I had the right coverages, not enough, and even too much in some cases. I learned what would happen to all things tied to my corporate job when I leave. We dissected my debt…ugh! Embarrassment and shame filled me.

    We looked at my current situation as a whole and figured out how to rearrange things in a way that made sense so we could build a timeline for my transition out of corporate America and into Emerge full-time. We looked at what to do and how to do it, making each step attainable instead of daunting. We outlined the steps and I felt empowered because now I have knowledge and a solid course of action. She sloughed off my embarrassment and doused my shame, putting me in control of my financial future by helping me learn. Uncertainty and fear no long have me in their grasp and there is hope on the horizon. Learning, understanding, and taking the right steps has increased my self-worth and it feels incredible!
