• More Than Doubled Pinterest Traffic How I More than Doubled My Pinterest Traffic in One Week and How You Can Too (so you can leave your 9-to-5!)

You have wanted to leave your 9-to-5 corporate job for months now, maybe even years. But you’ve been struggling to be noticed, get seen, and find your ideal clients. And, let’s face it, without clients to coach, you don’t have a business, you have an expensive hobby.

Frustration sets in and, because you feel defeated, your mindset slinks back to old beliefs that push the false message that you’re not good enough and you can’t do this. It’s a vicious cycle.

Not having a mindset geared towards growth is one of the main reasons new entrepreneurs give up on their dreams of a better life. In recent years, science has proven that, through neuroplasticity, we can actually retrain our brains…our mindset. You can learn more about this powerful concept by working with me. 😊 (You can also get my Mind Fog to Mindset Mastered course right HERE if you’d like to test the waters.)

Okay, onto some stellar tips you can implement NOW to create a Pinterest strategy where your efforts are working FOR you and helping you catch the eye of your ideal clients and turn them into paying ideal clients so your business can thrive and you can leave your corporate job behind.

THERE IS A TON OF INFORMATION IN HERE!
BE SURE TO PIN IT SO YOU CAN REFER BACK TO IT LATER.

Why Pinterest? Here are some statistics for you: 1) there are 200 million monthly active users on Pinterest, 2) pinners spend 50% more time on average on Pinterest compared to other social channels, 3) 93% of Pinterest users plan to make purchases while 96% use it to research and gather information 4) more than 1/3 of Pinterest users choose Pinterest over Google as a search engine.

By now, you should be more than convinced that you need to be using Pinterest to help explode the growth of your business. Pinterest is a MUST in your social media strategy.

Many people consider Pinterest to be a social media platform. It’s NOT. It’s even BETTER…it’s a search engine like Google. People go to Pinterest looking for answers. They look for recipes, health tips, fashion ideas, and thousands of other things to help them in life. They are also looking for YOU…a coach.

    Help them find you!

    More Than Doubled Pinterest Traffic

    1)       GET A PINTEREST BUSINESS ACCOUNT

    Go to Pinterest HERE.

Set up your account as a business account.

Set up your profile and be sure to include: 1) your name, 2) what you do (make yourself searchable), and 3) your description (get key words in your description and have a call to action like a freebie for your ideal client).

    Pinterest Profile

Claim your website to connect the two. IMPORTANT: Grab your meta tag!! Put it somewhere safe, you’re going to use it in a step below.

    Pinterest Claim Your Website

    SEO (SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION):

In your website (hopefully you have WordPress), make sure you have the Yoast Plugin. Go to your SEO menu then to Social. On your Accounts tab, enter the URL for your Pinterest business account.

    Accounts Tab from Yoast Social

Go to your SEO menu then to Social then to your Facebook (yup Facebook) tab. Make sure you’re “Enabled.”

    Yoast Social Facebook Tab

Go to your SEO menu then to Social then to your Pinterest tab. Enter your meta tag you grabbed earlier, enter it, and Save Changes.

    Yoast Social Pinterest Tab

Install the jQuery Pin It Button for Images Plugin. This is an interactive hover button that appears on your images and allows those reading your blog post to easily “Pin It” to Pinterest.

    RICH PINS:

Make sure you have Rich Pins enabled. Rich Pins are pins that include more information than just a regular pin. Go to Pinterest’s Rich Pin Validator. Follow the steps there.

    Pinterest Rich Pins Validator

Go to any blog post on your website and copy the URL. Then paste that URL and click the “Validate” button.

After you click “Validate,” a new screen will pop up. You will see a message that says, “Your Pins have been validated! Apply to enable Rich Pins.” Just below that message, you’ll see your website’s domain with a bubble next to “HTML Tags” selected.

Click the button that says, “Apply Now.” You should then see a “Thank you!” message that they are reviewing your website. Now you’re all set! Your Rich Pins should appear in a day or two.

    Rich Pins Validator Thank You

    2)      SET UP YOUR PINTEREST ACCOUNT FOR YOUR IDEAL CLIENTS

    KEY WORDS:

Key words are your key to being found on Pinterest. Make sure everything you do in Pinterest is rich with SEO key words. Put key words in your profile, your pin descriptions, and your board descriptions.

    PROFILE:

Make sure your profile tells people what you do. Include key words…like “Coach” if you’re a coach. 😊

    BOARDS:

To give your account a professional look, make sure your boards have branded board covers. A board cover is simply a regular pin (size 600 pixels x 600 pixels) that you assign as the board’s “cover.” You select the board cover by editing the board, finding the cover board pin you created (in Canva, Photoshop, etc.), and saving it.

Put your best boards first and be sure to start with a board specific to your business.

Create boards that are pertinent to all facets of your business. Having 10-20 boards is optimal and having at least 50 pins per board is recommended. Be sure not to create too many boards, otherwise you will look disorganized and cluttered. If you don’t yet have 50 pins on a board, keep it Secret until you do.

Be sure to keep your boards active by pinning to them. If you find you’re not pinning to certain boards, make them Secret boards. Again, Pinterest is looking for you to be active and thus will rank you higher in the feed of your potential followers and ideal clients.

    3)      USING PINTEREST

    PINNING AND HASHTAGS:

Your Pinterest account is for your ideal clients; NOT for you. Make sure all your pins contain content that is useful, helpful, and valuable for THEM.

Make sure your pins have key-word rich headlines on your images to grab your ideal client’s attention and let them know what information is behind each pin for them. “How to”s are great as well as “X (5, 7, 10, etc.) Things / Ways to Help You X (Nail Your Branding, Find Your Ideal Client, etc.).”

Repin more from others than you do of your own pins. There are different ratios out there. I say, just make sure you’re repining at least 5 from others for every 1 of yours. You’ll figure out what feels right for you. Make sure when you’re repining from others that the description is filled in with key words. Why, you ask? Even though it’s not your pin, you want to rank high within Pinterest so people can find YOUR repin and, through that, find YOU.

You also want to verify that the pin brings you to the full post where the content and value are located. Click on the pin and make sure the link works and doesn’t take you to a fake site, a broken link, someplace shady, etc.

Pinterest now allows you to use hashtags. As long as your descriptions are key-word rich, you shouldn’t need many hashtags. Make sure to use hashtags that are relevant to your content or board.

Follow influencers in your niche and repin their pins. Again, this has the potential to get YOU noticed.

Create a pin image with a killer, informative headline / title that links back to your Pinterest boards from other social media platforms (including Pinterest) to provide value to your ideal clients.

    GROUP BOARDS:

Joining group boards in your niche can increase your exposure and get more eyes on your work and what you offer. They have thousands of followers. Most boards are a pin-for-a-pin, meaning for every pin you post of your own material, they ask that you repin a pin from the group board to one of your boards. Each group board has different parameters for joining so just read the board’s description to learn how to join it.

Here are some great boards to join…

    AUTOMATION / TAILWIND:

To show Pinterest you are an active account, you must pin frequently…like constantly. I’ve heard some people say to pin 100 pins a day! WHAT?! When you have a corporate job, there simply isn’t time to pin that much.

As I noted above, Pinterest isn’t really a “social” platform. Therefore, it’s an ideal platform for using automated scheduling.

Using automation is extremely helpful. I use Tailwind (the only official scheduling partner of Pinterest) and it saves soooo much time because you can batch your pinning all at once! From an efficiency perspective, as long as other Pinterest users (your ideal clients) see your pins, you can effectively engage with them throughout the day and have them see your pinning activity notifications without having to be on Pinterest in real-time or all the time!

When your Pinterest strategy includes (which it should) pinning a lot, pinning throughout the day, and not spamming your target audience / ideal clients by pinning the same content to multiple group boards all at once, Tailwind is the tool you want.

You can get a free trial HERE (pssst…this is an affiliate link {more on this below}; if you like the free trial you get from my link and end up paying $15 per month or $119 per year to continue using it, I will receive a small commission…so I thank you for helping me stay in business so I can keep helping you and others just like YOU! 😊) Play around with it a bit during your free trial and get familiar with how it works.

One very helpful tool within Tailwind are Tribes. Tribes are basically communities of like-minded people all helping one another share pins to boost exposure. There seems to be more skin-in-the-game with Tailwind Tribes versus Pinterest group boards. I have found Tribes to be very niched while group boards tend to hold sections of all kinds of different topics. To maximize my reach, I use both.

When joining Tribes, be sure to follow the Tribe rules. You’ll get the most of Tribes and will avoid being removed from a Tribe. Remember, pin more from others than you are pinning.

Here are some great tribes to join:

    Bloggers Killin It on Pinterest

    Blogging Friends Pins

    Entrepreneurs & Coaches

    Female Digital Nomads

    Small Business

Remember above when I recommended checking where the pin takes you when repining from others? When using Tailwind, you have to first schedule your pin, then hop over to your scheduled pins and click on it from there to see where it goes. While Tailwind is extremely helpful, also be sure to pin manually here and there throughout the day. Remember, Pinterest wants to see you active ON Pinterest.

    4)     HAVE A BLOG

No matter what kind of coach you are, write a blog.

Provide value, entertainment, and always have a call-to-action for your ideal clients. Make sure to include a beautifully branded, vertical, Pinterest-worthy graphic. The optimal size in 2018 appears to be 600 pixels x 1,260 pixels. Make sure your blog title is rich with SEO key words to boost your chances of being found.

Have affiliate links in your blogs as a way to bring passive income into your business. When you leave that steady corporate paycheck behind, you’re going to need to bring revenue into your business in a variety of ways. To remain legally compliant, you must always include a statement (see mine at the bottom) that you have affiliate links in your post.

One easy affiliate to have is Amazon. Here is an example for you, check out my Empowerment Book of the Week Blog. In it, I have links to books my ideal clients can buy on Amazon. You pay the same price you would regardless of my affiliate link, but Amazon pays me a small commission for sending you there to buy.

See what I did there? 😊 I kept you looking at my content AND I brought you to a blog post with affiliate links to Amazon. So, two things happened: 1) if you’re not my ideal client, hopefully I’ve still helped you in some way and may make a small commission if you choose to purchase a book and 2) if you ARE my ideal client, I’ve given you value by bringing you to a blog with tons of excellent books and I’ve brought you to my website where you can have a look around to see if you want to get any of my fabulous products or decide if you want to work with me.

    5)       PINTEREST STRATEGY

Pinterest is a long-term strategy for the growth and success of your business so you can work towards leaving your 9-to-5 job. Start out by implementing some of the tips I’ve shared here. Check your Pinterest analytics from time to time to see what things are working for you and what things are not. From there, you can improve your profile, your boards, and the quality of your pins.

    Pinterest Analytics

If you have the time, comment on pins from influencers in your niche. This will increase your visibility. If people comment on your pins, be sure to comment back…this helps to build your know-like-trust factor.

I always tell my clients that Pinterest should be their main platform when creating their social media strategy. Again, because 1) it’s FREE, 2) it functions as a search engine, 3) the reach you can get is phenomenal, 4) you can automate it easily with Tailwind, and…5) YOUR PIN NEVER DIES (like your posts do on other platforms once everyone else piles on top).

With Pinterest, the number of followers you have is almost irrelevant. Your “monthly views” indicates how many people your pins are reaching. For me, that number is WAY more than any of my other platforms…combined!

So, make Pinterest the first thing you set up and then pick either Facebook or Instagram as your second focus. Be cautious not to try to be active on ALL social media platforms. You’ll end up burnt out and not truly serving any one platform well.

From time to time, go through your pins and boards and clean things up. Make boards secret if you haven’t pinned to them in a while. Check your pins to make sure links are active and lead people to the right place. Delete pins that no one is looking at or sharing.

Here’s a look at what following these steps has done for me. In one week, I more than doubled my Pinterest traffic from 21.4K monthly views to 48K monthly views. The picture on the left was captured on 7/24 and the picture on the right was captured on 7/31.

Pinterest GrowthNow, does that mean that all of those 49.9K monthly viewers are my ideal clients? Of course not, but even if only 1% are, I’ll take it!

Above all, make sure you’re pining content that your ideal client NEEDS. Show her how much value you’re giving her for free that will help her decide to work with you on a paid basis. Your Pinterest strategy is ALL about serving your ideal client and helping her find you.

5 Things to do Before You Leave Your 9-to-5

I know it. I’ve been there.

Slumped on the bathroom floor, crying so hard that no sound was coming out of my mouth. Tears burning my swelling eyes. Pain in the pit of my stomach. Crying out, “Why?!?!”

The phrase, “God doesn’t give you more than you can handle.” popped into my head. And I shouted to God, “I can’t handle ANY MORE!!!!!”

This is the state my corporate job put me into. Cortisol pulsing through me. Mental and physical anguish tearing me apart.

EVERY SINGLE DAY I wanted to quit. Just leave. Walk away and never look back.

    But I didn’t.

I knew that if I didn’t have a strategy in place for my online coaching business, I would fail as an entrepreneur and be in an even worse place in my life than I was working my corporate job.

And because I want YOU to success in your business, I’m sharing with you the 5 things you need to do before you leave your 9-to-5 job.

    5-Things-to-do-Before-You-Leave-Your-9-to-5

    1.      Start Your Coaching Business

Quite likely, you have already felt your passion calling you…pulling on you…pushing you. Maybe fear gremlins have got you and you’re worried you don’t know what to do. Or maybe, you’re hearing an old belief in your head that’s telling you, “You’re not good enough.” And think, “But I’m not ready yet.”

    Here’s what I want you to do…START.

You ARE good enough and you will figure out what to do.

Starting your online coaching business now will help you build the foundation of your business so when you ARE ready to leave your day job, you already have things well under way.

If you’re feeling uncertain about your abilities, start out by coaching for free! Doing this will build your confidence and help you create a structure for your coaching program. Start with a 3-month period and see how it goes. Your clients will be thrilled and they may even turn into paying clients!!! Plus, this will give you a feel for the work you believe you want to do and solidify whether or not it IS truly what you want to do. Practicing your skills through free coaching will help improve your confidence and make you feel more empowered in your abilities as a coach.

If you work in an office, working your online business from home will be quite a change. Yes, working from home comes with some nice perks, like working in your jammies if you want and doing laundry during the day. It also comes with freedom and flexibility that are very tempting to slip into becoming unmotivated and maybe even lazy. Being able to work from home and be your own boss, building a successful business, takes discipline and self-motivation.

And remember, being an entrepreneur is not a get-rich-quick kind of thing. When you make the decision to run an online business, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. You need to be committed for the long haul. Building the kind of business and life you want is an investment of time, money, effort, and energy. So, starting your “side hustle” while you’re still working your day job will give you a good taste of what’s to come. Because success does NOT happen overnight.

    2.     Get Your Finances in Order

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know about the financial mess I made (and why) of my life in my youth AND how I’ve managed to pay off two huge loans and my credit card. You can check out THIS BLOG to read more about it. This life experience is what helped me realize the importance of getting your finances in order BEFORE you leave your corporate job.

You want to create a profit and loss statement where you detail everything you’re spending on your business and everything you’re making from your business. Create a budget for yourself of where you want to invest your money. Think about things like hiring a coach, attending networking events, buying tools and systems to support your business, get a separate cell phone for your business (versus your corporate job).

I always recommend starting three different accounts at your bank: 1) emergency fund, 2) short term fund, and 3) long term fund. At BARE MINIMUM, you want to create the emergency fund. This account will be where you build your nest-egg of at least 6 months’ worth of money that will allow you pay all of your minimum living expenses for those months when your income from your business dips. Because, you know, when you leave that steady paycheck behind, your income will likely vacillate, especially in the first few years.

Use your corporate paycheck to 1) fund your business in the beginning and 2) create an emergency fund. Not making enough money in your business is one of the biggest things that can cause you to want to quit. Take steps NOW to alleviate the stress of not having enough money to pay your bills by building a stash of money.

    3.     Hire a Coach

Because the online world and becoming an entrepreneur is so vastly different from working in corporate America, you won’t know what you’re doing in the beginning. And that’s okay, none of us did! 😊 As you’re thinking about your finances and setting yourself a budget for where your money is going, I highly recommend you work in money to hire a coach.

A coach will help you learn what you need to know in order to build your successful, profitable business. I urge you to take your time in hiring a coach. This person is someone you want to follow for a while to get a feel for her, what she offers, her work ethic, her vibe, the results she’s gotten for her clients, and more. She is someone you want to resonate with, who you trust, and who you KNOW will help you propel forward in your business. You will be paying her money to do her job…make sure she’s the right person for you.

    4.     Create a Business Plan

Your “side hustle” is a business. You want to treat it like one.

Create a business plan. Be sure to include your…

    ·         “Why” behind your business.

    ·         Mission, vision, goals.

    ·         Ideal client / target market. What her pain points are. How you solve them.

    ·         Action plan for bringing income into your business: all the things you plan to offer (one-on-one coaching, group coaching, courses, books, retreats, webinars, podcasts, etc.), including their prices.

    ·         Best projections of your profit and loss statement, including budgeting for hiring a coach, hiring a virtual assistant (VA), attending events or masterminds, paying for systems, etc.

    ·         Strategy to make it all happen.

Remember, your business is a long-term plan for your life, not a fantasy of fast, easy money. In the beginning, it’s a lot of work and will take dedication. Once you find your groove, you’ll begin to create the balance you so desire in your life.

    5.     Reprogram Your Mindset for Success

I’ve saved this one for last because it is the MOST IMPORTANT.

You did all the “right” things, what you were “supposed to do.” You went to college, got a “safe and secure” 9-to-5 job in corporate America with a 401K, pension, and benefits, maybe you even got your MBA like I did. You ALSO, ended up miserable, stressed out, unhealthy, having NO balance in life, and no social life because all you do is work your tail off to make someone you don’t even know rich.

Finally, you started to wonder, “Is this really it? This is what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life?” Through the anxiety that has you feeling overwhelmed and suffocated every…single…day, you felt a pull to do something more with your life. You had a desire to truly help people and do work that is meaningful and valuable, to make an impact on this world.

And so, you started your business. Like most of us, you likely started out as a solopreneur…you know, you are the CEO of your business…and you’re the assistant, and the technology person creating your website, and figuring out social media, and creating content for your clients, and trying to figure out how to be a master at marketing, and building relationships, and perfecting your selling skills…you’re doing it ALL.

And yet…your business isn’t flourishing. The clients are non-existent…and so is your income. All you’re doing is investing with no return on your investment. You start to doubt yourself, your fear gremlins are biting at you, you wonder if everyone was right, that “you’re not good enough” and “you’ll never make a living being a coach.” You feel deflated, defeated, and you want to give up.

Your fabulous business that you created to help others create the lives of their dreams while creating the life of your dreams feels like it’s slipping away.

    IT DOESN’T HAVE TO!!!

What I learned on my own journey is that the mindset of a successful woman in corporate America is VERY different than the mindset of a successful female entrepreneur. Without creating a mindset ready to propel into growth and success, the rest simply doesn’t matter.

Get yourself on the right path NOW and start reprogramming your mindset to serve you instead of hold you back. And if you’re struggling, mindset and empowerment are my specialty; reach out to me HERE and let’s chat about the possibility of working together so we can get you on your way to building that fabulous business you desire and you’re worthy of!

And you can finally escape your 9-to-5 prison!

Organic Toothpaste – Does it Work?

When I first decided to “go organic,” I had no idea how much I needed to learn. I also realized I was probably going to have to decide just how deeply I wanted to go.

When it came to eating out, was I NOT going to eat what was on the menu if it wasn’t organic? Hmmmm…I didn’t want to go THAT far. I was satisfied with eating the majority of my meals at home and eating organic. And when I went out to eat or stayed overnight with friends, I would just eat what they ate.

When it came to health and beauty products, was I going to throw away everything I had, basically throwing out hundreds of dollars, and run out and replace everything with organic products, spending more money???? Hmmm…that didn’t sound like a good idea at all! Already having a mountain of debt, I didn’t want waste money.

So, I decided that, once I was out of a product, I would then get an organic one to replace it and s…l…o…w…l…y migrate myself over. Now, that wasn’t all that easy. As with your typical products out there, some work with our body chemistry and some simply don’t. So, with the products I was using, I had to try quite a few to find something I LIKED that also WORKED.

When thinking about my beliefs and my lifestyle and my habits, I knew I wasn’t going to be way over on the end of the spectrum where I refused anything that was not organic. For me and my life, that is simply not practical and I don’t want to limit or restrict myself in that way. I do my research (LOVE the Think Dirty app    – it’s FREE!), I think about the product, how I use it, and how passionate I feel about whether or not I want that product to be organic.

By this I mean, if it’s something I’m rinsing or washing off of my skin or out of my mouth, I’m okay if it’s not organic, but do want it to be as good for me as possible with as natural of ingredients as possible. Now, if it’s something like an eye cream or a moisturizer that is going to stay on my skin all day, I do my best to make sure it’s organic.

Two things to note: 1) Remember that a company can put the word “organic” in their name, but NOT be USDA certified organic. The only truly American organic products have the USDA organic seal.

I learned this lesson early on when I used products by a company who had “organic” in their name and they were NOT. 2) Very often, the organic standards in other countries are more stringent and restrictive than here in the USA.

Something important to be on the lookout for in your health and beauty products, including toothpaste, is sodium lauryl sulfate, also known as SLS. SLS is an additive that allows cleansing products to foam up. What is unacceptable to my own tolerance is that SLS has been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation, and endocrine disruption.

There are seven ingredients considered to be toxic that are often found in most non-organic toothpastes. They are…

    1.       Triclosan

    2.       Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

    3.       Artificial Sweeteners

    4.       Fluoride

    5.       Propylene Glycol

    6.       Diethanolamine (DEA)

    7.       Microbeads

Again, I try not to be on crazy-ends of any spectrum and I know we’re all going to die from something. My perspective is that I plan to live my life doing my best to stave off things like cancer as much as I possibly can…or at least not encourage it. 😊 So, I do my research and decide what I’m willing to tolerate. I always recommend doing the same for yourself.

When I started trying toothpastes, I was able to find organic ones and very lucky to find ones I LIKE that also WORK.

I tried quite a few organic toothpastes, from gritty powders (like Dirty Mouth Organic Toothpowder) to more traditional pastes.

    I found two I like.

My number 2 choice is from Zk’in Organics out of Australia. The flavor and texture are a bit different than I’m used to so that took a little adjusting. The taste isn’t bad, it just isn’t the typical mint flavor you’d find in most toothpastes. The texture is a bit more watery than a typical paste.

My dental hygienist praised how well I take care of my teeth, so I have to believe it’s working well.

This company is Australian certified organic and their products are made in Australia. They are cruelty free and Vegan. Their products are made without palm oil, fluoride, and SLS. Their packaging is recyclable.

The reason I have it as my number 2 choice is simply because it ships from Australia so that makes it somewhat expensive.

My number 1 choice is from RADIUS.

I like both their Mint Aloe Neem and their Ginger Citrus Whitening. The flavor of the mint is, again, not your typical mint toothpaste flavor, but it is pleasant. I’m currently using the Ginger Citrus Whitening and the ginger citrus is very mild and not overpowering. The texture is more like a typical paste with little gritty bits in it that seem to do a good job scrubbing the surfaces of my teeth.

I’m still getting rave reviews from my dental hygienist when I go in for my cleanings so that makes me happy.

This company is USDA organic certified and ECOCERT (an organic certification organization, founded in France in 1991. It is based in Europe but conducts inspections in over 80 countries, making it one of the largest organic certification organizations in the world.) certified, cruelty-free, made in the USA, and women-owned (Woohoo!!). Their packaging is recyclable and their tube size is carry-on approved. Their products are formulated without xylitol (sugar alcohol used as a sweetener); GMOs; SLS; fluoride; saccharine; glutens; detergents; artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, or sweeteners. This list makes me feel pretty darn good about using their products. 😊

As with our body chemistry, our mouth chemistry is different. These toothpastes have worked well for me. If you try them, I hope you like them and they work well for you also. And if you DO try any of them, please drop me a comment and let me know how you liked them.

Empower yourself to make healthy oral hygiene decisions that resonate with YOU.

Week 31: The Season’s of a Woman’s Life by Daniel J. Levinson. “Based on exhaustive interviews with a diverse group of forty-five women, The Seasons of a Woman’s Life completes and substantiates Levinson’s thesis: that all human beings go right on developing throughout their lives in a pattern of amazing inevitability. Firmly grounded in original scientific research, The Seasons of a Woman’s Life is unusual in being not only vividly readable but a rich source of insights and consolation. It speaks with uncanny directness to the dreams, emotional crises, inexplicable feelings, social conflicts, and psychological upheavals that mark each woman’s life course. Every woman will recognize *and find comfort in recognizing *the deep shape of her own life in the pattern it outlines, from Early Adult Transition (ages 17 to 22) to the Mid-life Transition (ages 40 to 45) and beyond. Alive with the voices of real women, perceptive and sympathetic, this book is destined *like its predecessor *to become a classic.”

    The Power of Positive Thinking

Week 28: Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin. “Gretchen Rubin’s answer: through habits. Habits are the invisible architecture of everyday life. It takes work to make a habit, but once that habit is set, we can harness the energy of habits to build happier, stronger, more productive lives. So if habits are a key to change, then what we really need to know is: How do we change our habits?

Better than Before answers that question. It presents a practical, concrete framework to allow readers to understand their habits—and to change them for good. Infused with Rubin’s compelling voice, rigorous research, and easy humor, and packed with vivid stories of lives transformed, Better than Before explains the (sometimes counter-intuitive) core principles of habit formation.

Along the way, Rubin uses herself as guinea pig, tests her theories on family and friends, and answers readers’ most pressing questions—oddly, questions that other writers and researchers tend to ignore:

    • Why do I find it tough to create a habit for something I love to do?
    • Sometimes I can change a habit overnight, and sometimes I can’t change a habit, no matter how hard I try. Why?
    • How quickly can I change a habit?
    • What can I do to make sure I stick to a new habit?
    • How can I help someone else change a habit?
    • Why can I keep habits that benefit others, but can’t make habits that are just for me?”

    Better Than Before

Week 24: Grace, Not Perfection by Emily Ley. “As a busy wife, new mother, business owner, and designer, Emily Ley came to a point when she suddenly realized she couldn’t do it all. She needed to simplify her life, organize her days, and prioritize the priorities. She decided to hold herself to a standard of grace rather than perfection. This mantra led to the creation of her bestselling Simplified Planner®, a favorite among busy women everywhere—from mamas to executives and everywhere in between. Grace, Not Perfection takes this message from a daily planner to an inspirational book that encourages women to simplify and prioritize. Designed with Emily Ley’s signature aesthetic, this book gives women tangible ways to simplify their lives to give space to what matters most. With a focus on faith, Emily reminds readers that God abundantly pours out grace on us—and that surely we can extend grace to ourselves. Have you been told you can have it all, only to end up exhausted and occasionally out of sorts with the people you love? Are you ready for a new way of seeing your time? Learn to live a little more simply. Hold yourself and those you love to a more life-giving standard in Grace Not Perfection, and allow that grace to seep into your days, your family, and your heart.”

Week 22: The Warrior Goddess Way by HeatherAsh Amara. “Since its publication a short time ago, HeatherAsh Amara’s Warrior Goddess Training has become much more than just a book―its ten lessons have inspired thousands of women around the world to reclaim their power, their passion, and their freedom. In this much anticipated follow-up, The Warrior Goddess Way, Amara goes deeper, revealing three additional pillars of Warrior Goddess living that readers can apply to travel further down this sacred path: Wisdom, Authenticity, and Yes!

    • Wisdom arises naturally when we learn to listen. Not to the voices in our head, but the voices in our cells, our natural discernment, and our creative knowing.
    • Authenticity is embracing your vulnerability, your silliness, and owning all your superpowers. It’s accepting and loving what is, not what “should be.”
    • Yes! is about celebrating everything. All the time. (Even your greatest defeats.)

In exploring these three pillars, Amara delves into topics such as forgiveness, relationships, and finding your inner stillness. You will learn the art of maintaining emotional balance, cultivating self-respect, practicing heartfelt communication, and the power of consciously embracing life’s beginnings and endings. Like Warrior Goddess Training, this book is packed full of exercises and explorations designed to help you integrate the Warrior Goddess Way into your everyday life. You CAN learn to enjoy everything you do. Your potential for dancing through life is waiting to be awakened. Live the Warrior Goddess Way and claim the woman you are destined to be.”

    The Warrior Goddess Way

Week 21: Letting Go by David R. Hawkins. “Letting Go describes a simple and effective means by which to let go of the obstacles to Enlightenment and become free of negativity. During the many decades of the author’s clinical psychiatric practice, the primary aim was to seek the most effective ways to relieve human suffering in all of its many forms. The inner mechanism of surrender was found to be of great practical benefit and is described in this book.
Dr. Hawkins’s previous books focused on advanced states of awareness and Enlightenment. Over the years, thousands of students had asked for a practical technique by which to remove the inner blocks to happiness, love, joy, success, health, and, ultimately, Enlightenment. This book provides a mechanism for letting go of those blocks.
The mechanism of surrender that Dr. Hawkins describes can be done in the midst of everyday life. The book is equally useful for all dimensions of human life: physical health, creativity, financial success, emotional healing, vocational fulfillment, relationships, sexuality, and spiritual growth.
It is an invaluable resource for all professionals who work in the areas of mental health, psychology, medicine, self-help, addiction recovery, and spiritual development.”

    Letting Go

Week 20: Daring & Disruptive by Lisa Messenger. “DARING AND DISRUPTIVE IS AN INSIGHTFUL AND SOULFUL ACCOUNT OF THE ENTREPRENEUR’S ROLLER-COASTER RIDE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO SUCCEED ALMOST AS MUCH AS THEY WANT TO BREATHE …WHO WANT TO MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE AND THE ORDINARY EXTRAORDINARY. After decades of success in multiple industries, Lisa Messenger blends her personal stories with the important business lessons she has learned along the way, from why money is not the only currency to how to fail well. Lisa gives readers a valuable insight into her world, whether you’re a budding entrepreneur, seasoned game changer or a corporate ladder-climber dreaming of creating your own gig or making positive change from the inside. This book will help you dig deep, stay on purpose, back yourself, be true to your ideas, and ensure that if you’re thrown to the wolves, you’ll have the strength to come out leading the pack. Your life is your message to the world. So embrace the journey and live it out loud. “Business anarchy for fun and profit – not for the short of breath, weak of spine or faint of heart. Great teachers like the Buddha, Jesus, Moses, Mohammed, and Gandhi were all born with brains built essentially like anyone else’s―and then they changed their brains in ways that changed the world. Science is now revealing how the flow of thoughts actually sculpts the brain, and more and more, we are learning that it’s possible to strengthen positive brain states. By combining breakthroughs in neuroscience with insights from thousands of years of mindfulness practice, you too can use your mind to shape your brain for greater happiness, love, and wisdom. Buddha’s Brain draws on the latest research to show how to stimulate your brain for more fulfilling relationships, a deeper spiritual life, and a greater sense of inner confidence and worth. Using guided meditations and mindfulness exercises, you’ll learn how to activate the brain states of calm, joy, and compassion instead of worry, sorrow, and anger. Most importantly, you will foster positive psychological growth that will literally change the way you live in your day-to-day life. This book presents an unprecedented intersection of psychology, neurology, and contemplative practice, and is filled with practical tools and skills that you can use every day to tap the unused potential of your brain and rewire it over time for greater well-being and peace of mind.”

In Daily Love, Mastin shares some of his personal stories of darkness and light, embracing them all as part of his journey to becoming who he really is. He also speaks of various spiritual leaders who have influenced his life, such as Joseph Campbell, Caroline Myss, Tony Robbins, George Lucas, Oprah, his parents, and Jenna (his girlfriend). Giving details about the concepts and spiritual principles they put forth, he shows how these people have helped to guide him to success.”

Week 10: Tapping the Power Within by Iyanla Vanzant. In honor of International Women’s Day the occurred this week, I’m recommending this powerful book that paves the path to self-empowerment for women. It “will challenge you to stop struggling and start recognizing that it is possible to reconcile your humanity with your divinity. Whether you are a beginner on the path or a veteran in need of refreshment, Iyanla’s prescriptions can support your growth from the comfort of spiritual adolescence to the wisdom of spiritual maturity. You no longer need to settle for the way things are . . . you can open up to the way things can be—if you dare to tap the power within!”

    Tapping the Power Within

Week 9: Daring Greatly by Brene Brown, Ph. D. LMSW. “Daring Greatly is not about winning or losing. It’s about courage. In a world where “never enough” dominates and feeling afraid has become second nature, vulnerability is subversive. Uncomfortable. It’s even a little dangerous at times. And, without question, putting ourselves out there means there’s a far greater risk of getting criticized or feeling hurt. But when we step back and examine our lives, we will find that nothing is as uncomfortable, dangerous, and hurtful as standing on the outside of our lives looking in and wondering what it would be like if we had the courage to step into the arena—whether it’s a new relationship, an important meeting, the creative process, or a difficult family conversation. Daring Greatly is a practice and a powerful new vision for letting ourselves be seen.”

    Daring Greatly

Week 8: Tears to Triumph by Marianne Williamson. “Instead of allowing ourselves to embrace our hurt, we numb it, medicate it, dismiss it, or otherwise divert our attention so that we never have to face it. In refusing to acknowledge our suffering, we actually prolong it and deny ourselves the opportunity for profound wisdom—ultimately limiting our personal growth and opportunity for enlightenment. Frozen by denial, we are left standing in the breech. Whole industries profit from this immobility, and while they have grown rich, we have become spiritually poorer. As Marianne makes clear, true healing and transcendence can only come when we finally face our pain and wrestle with what it has to teach us.”

    Tears to Triumph

Week 7: Asian Secrets of Health, Beauty, and Relaxation by Sophie Benge. “For centuries, Asian women have relaxed and beautified themselves with exotic therapies derived from the materials of nature; plants, herbs, minerals, clays, and flowers.

Until now, Western women could only experience these pleasures by taking expensive trips to professional spas. In Asian Secrets of Health, Beauty, and Relaxation, Sophie Benge, an Asian beauty expert, supplies all the tools for experiencing luxurious Asian beauty treatments at home, including inexpensive, easy-to-follow recipes for soothing facials, relaxing aromatherapy baths, invigorating body scrubs, healthy food and drink recipes, remedies for specific ailments, and more. Now readers can spend a lavish day at the spa without leaving their house.

All the treatments in Asian Secrets of Health, Beauty, and Relaxation are natural and gentle to the body. readers can lie back and enjoy the benefits of a spa in their own homes.”

Week 6: When I Loved Myself Enough by Kim McMillen. “When I Loved Myself Enough is a beautiful collection of wisdom that is startling in its simplicity. By the end of the book, the message becomes clear: loving yourself holds the key to loving others and having others love you. By sharing her insights, the author also shows us how to feel the same sense of peace and quiet joy that illuminated her life. This book began as one woman’s gift to the world, hand-made by Kim McMillen and handed out to friends.” Give this gift to yourself.

    When I Loved Myself Enough

Week 5: Think and Grow Rich for Women by Sharon Lechter. “Women are the future of American business. According to a recent Nielsen report, women will control two-thirds of American consumer wealth in less than a decade. And yet almost all business and success literature is still written for men—dispensing advice that doesn’t take into account women’s unique strengths or address the demands of family life on mothers. Think and Grow Rich for Women is a powerful book outlining a master plan for success for ALL WOMEN.”

Think and Grow Rich for Women

Week 4: Unleash Your Inner Money Babe by Kathrin Zenkina. If you choose to buy the paperback version, you’ll get the Kindle version for FREE! We’ve talked a lot this week about money and manifesting. “Unleash Your Inner Money Babe is a workbook designed to help you let go of your past programming and limiting beliefs around money, and unlock the mindset of abundance and wealth. The workbook is designed to be a fun, exciting, truth-bomb packed 21 day challenge with the goal of manifesting $1,000 by the end of the 21 days.”

    Unleash Your Inner Money Babe

Week 3: Women & Money by Suze Orman. “Own the power to control your destiny. With her signature mix of insight, compassion, and soul-deep recognition, Suze Orman equips women with the financial knowledge and emotional awareness to overcome the blocks that have kept them from acting in the best interest of their money–and of themselves.”

    Women and Money

Week 2: #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso. “#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn’t about where you went to college or how popular you were in high school. It’s about trusting your instincts and following your gut; knowing which rules to follow and which to break; when to button up and when to let your freak flag fly.”

  • 3 Hours in the Deli Line 3 Hours in the Deli Line

3 Hours in the Deli Line

It was a beautiful summer Sunday and my boyfriend and I decided to have lunch in the park. So, I ran out to the grocery store to pick up some picnic foods.

I don’t typically get us lunchmeats or cheeses from the deli counter because processed foods are just not healthy. But, we thought it would be fun to make some sandwiches so I headed to the deli counter.

As is pretty typical on a Sunday there was quite a long line. I grabbed my ticket and saw I was number 39…they were on number 17.

I tucked myself out of the way of the congestion at the counter as I heard the exasperation of a woman approaching.

“Ugh, look at this line! I’ll see you in three hours!” she growled to a man I presume was her husband.

I looked over and saw him acknowledge her growl as he turned with two children and walked away.

She stomped over to grab her ticket and grumbled something. She then proceeded to sort of huff and puff, shifting her weight from foot to foot impatiently.

All I could of was the missed opportunities.

I’m not saying that standing in a long deli is fun or we should be happy about it. However, there’s really nothing we can do, but wait for our number to be called and place our order.

This woman missed out on an opportunity for some self-care. Since she was basically stuck waiting, she could have used the time to do some therapeutic breathing (that would have helped to calm her frustration) or say a mantra or affirmations in her head.

And as a mother, she could have used the situation to teach her children how to handle displeasing situations that are out of our control by simply having a positive attitude.

She chose to adopt the life-happens-to-me perspective versus being empowered and 1) recognizing the situation as being out of her control, 2) accepting that it is what it is, and 3) changing how she dealt with it.

We have a choice in every situation in our lives, whether it’s something we can control or something we can’t…the decision is ours to make.

The next time you find yourself in a frustrating situation, be self-aware and recognize, accept, and change how you CHOOSE to deal with it.

  • A random act of kindness. A Random Act of Kindness

    A random act of kindness.

Each year, I make a point of doing at least one random act of kindness. Throughout the year opportunities just appear. Whether it’s paying for groceries for the person in line ahead of me at the grocery whose out-of-state check won’t be accepted or a buying gifts cards, grocery staples, bath items, and lottery tickets for someone who has been going through a tough time, there are always opportunities that pop up.

Sometimes, my gift is anonymous and sometimes, due to the situation (being in line at the grocery store) it’s not anonymous. Every time, the reaction is different. While I don’t do it for a certain response, it is interesting the different reactions that happen. Some seem in shock and say nothing. Some look at me strangely and say, “Thank you.”

This past weekend, an opportunity popped up. We were out to dinner and our waitress was particularly good. She was pleasant and just the right amount of attentive. I had lost my voice due to a cold and she brought me some Italian wedding soup without charging us. One of the times she walked away, I noticed her pause at an empty table and stretch her feet.

Clearly I had no idea what was going on in her life and she didn’t share anything personal during our visit. Her beautiful face was a bit weathered from life. Though she didn’t complain and was very nice to us, she just seemed…tired. I’ve waitressed before and I know how exhausting it can be to be constantly on your feet for hours, running around serving people and not usually making great money.

When we finished eating, I asked my boyfriend to get the car and that I wanted to catch our waitress quickly before we left. I found her on the outdoor patio smoking a cigarette, checking her phone. When she saw me, she put out her cigarette and apologized, asking if I still needed something.

I asked her to sit with me and told her about my random act of kindness that I do each year. Her eyes fixed intently on mine as I spoke. I opened her hand and put $60.00 in her hand, but all she could see was the $20.00 so she didn’t really know what she was holding. She shook her head and said she couldn’t take it. I pressed it firmly into her hand and told her she could and that she matters in this world. In that moment, her gaze broke and waves of tears came crashing out of her eyes. She threw her arms around me and held me so tightly. I felt her body shake as she squeezed me and sobbed.

I let her hold me as long as she needed. When we released, she looked at me and simply said, “Thank you.” I told her I wanted her to get a massage and make sure they rub her feet. She smiled and let out a chuckle. She thanked me again while holding onto my hands. I gave her hands a squeeze and smiled at her as I left.

I still have no idea what is happening in her world, but I suspect she’s going through something difficult. I also have no idea what she’ll use the money for, but now she has it and hopefully it will help her in some way.

There are people in need all around us. You never know what a simple act of kindness can mean to someone. Open your eyes and you will see opportunities are everywhere.

An act of kindness doesn’t have to be monetary. You would be surprised how big a difference a smile, a hug, or a handful of wildflowers can make.

Our world needs more kindness. Be a light in someone’s darkness.

Will you join me? What random act of kindness have you done this year? I’d love to know. Share in the comments below.

  • The Bottom of the List The Bottom of the List

    The Bottom of the List

I love making lists! Grocery lists, Christmas lists, to-do lists, life lists…all kinds of lists! I feel so productive and happy when I check things off the list.

I’m a bit of an organization freak. With my chaotic life, my lists help me prioritize things that need to get done and also keep track of the things I want to get done.

Each workday, I make a list for both my corporate job and my business, Emerge Empowerment. I prioritize the non-negotiable items that absolutely must get done before I go to bed at night. Then I draw a line and add some items I’d like to get done if I have time.

The weekends get a different list and the list…is rather long. Similarly, it gets lines for things that I have to make sure get done, like grocery shopping, and then there are the house projects or things I’d like to get done, like touch-up painting spots on the living room walls. Often times, I end up with a couple lists, one for each day.

I go about my workdays and weekends getting things done that need to get done and crossing them off my lists. At some point, the list just gets messy. And with my itch to stay organized, I decide I need to consolidate and refresh the list. So, the items not crossed off go onto a fresh sticky-note and I add anything new.

There is something troubling about list-making though. When writing and rewriting and rewriting again the same things over and over, it can seem as though you’re not accomplishing anything. This can lead to feeling defeated and we go down the dreaded path of judging and ridiculing ourselves for not getting enough done.

The other day, as I wrote down, “-cut stickers off window candles” for honestly probably the 40th time, I STOPPED. “Ah! I’m tired of writing this down week after week after week!” In that moment I decided not to rewrite the three items at the bottom of the list.

    Instead, I completed them!

And, oh, my goodness did it feel amazing!! Who knew how great it would feel to get those things DONE?! Now, they were not at all a priority. But they were these insignificant things that kept nagging at me. And they were things I knew weren’t going to take huge amounts of time. They were just things that were unimportant that I simply didn’t feel like doing, but wanted done. Completing them and NOT rewriting them on my list felt so…cleansing.

Are you a list-maker? What’s on the bottom of your list that you can do and stop rewriting? Bring up three items from the bottom of your list and just do them. You will experience a fabulous sense of accomplishment! And then…celebrate!

“Nothing builds self-esteem and self-confidence like accomplishment.”

    ~Thomas Carlyle
