Three levels of identity - how to have them serve you so you can quit your job and leave your 9-5 corporate job. #Leave9-5 #Leave9to5 #Escape9to5 #QuitYourJob #DebbieCromack #How #Coach

    Identity

I never really thought much about my identity until it was about to change…dramatically.

I worked in corporate America for over 25 years, 19 in my most recent company. Whenever I met someone new, the conversation often started with, “Hi, I’m Debbie!” followed by, “Hi, I’m {insert name}. What do you do, Debbie?” Proudly, I would respond, “I’m an Operations Manager at {insert big-name, well-known corporate company}” and receive an impressed nod of approval.

My job, the company I worked for, became who I was…my identity. I worked 10, 12, sometimes 14 hours a day and often times on weekends as well. This wasn’t unusual. The amount of work was overwhelming and my counterparts worked similar hours. Spending so much of my life working my job, it was who I became as a person.

And for a long time, I was proud of who I was and what I had accomplished in my life. I had earned my MBA, worked at a highly-valued and admired company, was in a long-term relationship with an amazing man, had a beautiful home and amazing friends, and life seemed pretty darn good.

Sadly, with all I had accomplished, there was an emptiness gnawing at me. Something deep inside my soul was unfulfilled and I felt my life had no real meaning or purpose. I had a deep desire to help people, truly help people…something I definitely was NOT doing in my 9-5 job.

After bawling my eyes out on the bathroom floor one too many times, I DECIDED I was done being an employee and I started my Emerge Empowerment, LLC business…as a side hustle. My business morphed and changed over time as I learned and niched and tweaked. It filled me with purpose and passion. I was finally doing work that lit up my soul.

Admittedly, I was exhausted. With my corporate job being as demanding as it was, there was little time (or energy) to put into my business. And, as much as I loved it, it wasn’t far enough developed financially to pay my bills. And so, the straddle continued for about 2½ years.

I believe our identity exists on a spectrum. You see, when it came to my career, there was the employee side of the spectrum and the CEO/entrepreneur side of the spectrum. For the bulk of my 2½ years, I was on the employee side. VERY SLOWLY over time, the needle on the spectrum began to move towards the CEO side. And when I finally made the DECISION that I was going to quit my job, I really started putting my toes into my CEO shoes. And once I made that decision, things in my business really started to shift.

I’ve only had my feet fully in my CEO shoes as a full-time entrepreneur for just about two weeks and I know I still have a ways to go to truly FEEL my identity and I’m so ready for the rest of the journey.

    1)     Values

One of the other things I found myself questioning along my identity journey was my values. Not my core values, but what I placed value on.

Working for a fortune 100 company, I now realize I measured my self-worth against my job and the company I worked for. When it came to being my own boss, running my own business, my self-worth had to come from…ME. And when that realization struck me, I struggled…A LOT.

I started to question my own value. I wondered if I would still get nods of impressed-approval when I told people what I do for a living. And then I wondered why I even wondered that! Why did it matter to me what others thought of me and my career? Did I somehow feel I needed their approval or permission to go after my dreams and desires? Could I even run a business? What if I’m not good enough? What if no one even wants to work with me? I have no idea what I’m doing! What is wrong with me?

YIKES! This craziness kept my head spinning for quite some time.

That was when I started digging…DEEP…into mindset work. And I’m so grateful I did.

    Facebook-Fan-Page

    2)    Thoughts

As I look back now, I see it all so much more clearly. I was allowing so many of my individual thoughts to get foggy and cluttered with fears. You know, those negative stories we play over and over and OVER in our heads. Stories that came from an interpretation of something that was said to you or about you when you were younger. Stories that weren’t true, but for some reason, you’ve always held onto them as being true.

Yup, those are the thoughts that were ruling my mind. I allowed those pesky fears to sprinkle my thoughts for so long that they became my beliefs about myself, my worth, my value. And through that vision, I was nothing at all.

And so, I decided to get acquainted with my fears. To understand what they were and where they came from. Why did I think so little of myself? Why did I think my worth and value came from being great at spreadsheets and putting together PowerPoint presentations? How did I come to place my self-worth in the hands of big-wigs who knew nothing about me?

I dug. And I found pain and heartache…and answers.

You see, when we step in our CEO-shoes, our self-worth and our value of ourselves has to come from US. And if you’ve always been used to it coming from others, this can be VERY confusing and difficult if your self-worth was never cultivated. When you have allowed your identity to be defined by someone other than you for the majority of your life, it can feel really scary to suddenly be the owner of your identity.

    3)    Beliefs

When you keep repeating the same thoughts in your mind over and over, those thoughts form your beliefs. And your mind looks for anything and everything to confirm those beliefs. When those beliefs are negative in nature, no amount of strategy, no fancy technology system, no amount of free coaching is going to lead to your success as an online coach.

I don’t say this to deter you. I say it to fuel you because here’s the thing…YOU are the master of your mind. YOU have the power to control and change your thoughts to SERVE you versus HINDER you. Your mind is so powerful, you just need to learn how to feed it with your new truths and reality.

Here’s the most basic way I can explain this to you. Your mind only knows what it’s told, thus it only knows what YOU tell it. When you were little and learned how to tie your shoelaces, your mind didn’t know how to do it until you were taught and then you practiced until you knew how to do it so well that you no longer had to think about it.

    Introverts Nail Your Message

Now you’re older and wiser. I want you to notice the thoughts in your head. How frequently are the negative? Your willingness to be aware and truthful is key. When you notice a negative thought, I want you to simply recognize it…without judgement or ridicule…reword it with a positive spin. I want you to create positive affirmations for yourself that you repeat throughout the day.

When you make a habit of shifting your thoughts, you start changing your mindset. And when you change your mindset to the positive things you desire in life and the things you ARE capable of and worthy of, your mind, once again, looks for everything to affirm your thoughts and beliefs…thereby attracting those things to you.

One powerful way I have been reprogramming my thoughts is by using the ThinkUp app. It’s a free app that also has paid options with more features. You simply type in your positive affirmations or choose from the hundreds of affirmations the app offers and then record them in your voice. The app then adds meditation music in the background of your voice saying your positive affirmations. The most optimal way to use it is at night while you’re falling asleep so as you’re drifting off to sleep, and for however long you set the timer, you’re feeding your brain, your subconscious, with your positive affirmations. Science shows that your subconscious is most receptive when you are unconscious, basically asleep. This is the perfect time to feed your positive affirmations to your mind using the ThinkUp app. Using your iPhone, check it out HERE and give it a try.

    Take Action and Step In

Now I want you to take ACTION!! Write down on paper and then read aloud WHO you identify as. If you’re feeling brave, share it in the comments below. Here’s an example to get you thinking…

I identify as a successful Business Coach, the CEO of my profitable, successful business.

I’m not a fake-it-until-you-make-it kind of person. I DO, however want you starting to move your identity from “employee” to “CEO.” Even if you don’t feel fully in your CEO-shoes just yet, I want you starting to ask yourself what thoughts would you-as-a-CEO have. What actions would you take as the CEO of your business? At least step in by putting your toes into your CEO-shoes. 😊

When you’re straddling your 9-5 and running your business, your time is limited. I want you stepping more and more into your CEO-shoes. I want you thinking and acting from those CEO-shoes. I want you focusing on revenue-producing tasks. If you want to know more about what I mean by this, let’s chat! Set up a coffee/cocoa chat HERE.

Make sure your identity statement rings true for YOU.

  • Entrepreneurship The Physical Torture and Honoring Your Body Entrepreneurship – The Physical Torture and Honoring Your Body

With this week's theme being about our health, in today's blog, I talk about the physical impact to our bodies of stress and anxiety. The mind/body connection is strong and we need to learn how to manage our stress and honor our bodies. I've included some helpful self-care tips we can do to minimize the impact of stress. I'd love your feedback so please comment on the blog. #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #Success #Business #GirlBoss #DebbieCromack #Leave9-5 #Leave9to5 Pin it for later!

The mind-body connection is so much more powerful than most of us realize. And for those of us who do know how powerful it is, we may not be consciously aware as often as we should.

When we embark on entrepreneurship while still working our corporate jobs, it’s usually because something inside us desires more. We have this yearning and know we’re meant for something bigger in life. To make an impact in some way. To make a difference in someone’s life. We often don’t feel as though we’re truly helping people in the corporate world. Some of us have knowledge and wisdom from life experiences. Some of us get certifications in things we’re passionate about. And most of us are bursting with ideas and a desire to truly help people.

So we jump into the online world energized and excited! We usually take it somewhat slow and steady as we learn and try to figure out our way in the online space. We have our steady paychecks and whether we loathe our jobs or are we don’t, but still want to dabble in the world of entrepreneurship, we often cling to the safety and security of what our corporate jobs provide (401K, pension, benefits, stock options, etc.), at least for a little while.

What tends to happen is that we start getting up early or staying up late or using our lunch time to work on our side business. Trying to figure out all the pieces and how they fit together and what the best order of progression is becomes overwhelming. And so we get up even earlier and stay up even later. And because many of us are driven and motivated, we push ourselves and push ourselves.

We work harder and longer. We research and research trying to digest the unending amounts of data and information out there. We are relentless in our pursuit to improve our lives and the lives of others.

Here is what begins to happen:

    • Exhaustion starts to set in.
    • We may even feed our bodies with processed, on-the-fly foods because we need to eat quickly and keep going.
    • We’re constantly on fast-forward, trying to keep up with our jobs, our business, and our lives.
    • Our sleep becomes shallow, restless, and interrupted.
    • We likely let go of exercising because there “isn’t enough time” to fit it in with all we’re trying to accomplish.
    • We lose focus frequently.
    • Our heads feel like they’re in a fog.
    • We get frustrated easily.
    • We may even start to wonder why we’re doing this side business…and can we even do it.
    • Our passion douses, our creativity becomes cluttered, our energy is drained, and our desire fades.

And down the spiral we go.

This stimulates the doubts, fears, and negative stories that are deeply seated in our minds and inflames old pain and unhappiness in our souls. A chain reaction occurs sending our bodies into fight-or-flight mode, putting us into a state of stress and anxiety. And when we are in this state, here are the types of things that happen in our bodies:

    • Our immune system becomes suppressed and our chances of getting sick increase.
    • Our kidneys and adrenals release cortisol and adrenaline.
    • Our estrogen and progesterone production is halted, which signals more testosterone for fight-or-flight.
    • Our thyroid glands pretty much shut down.
    • We may experience heart palpitations or shortness of breath.
    • Our gut becomes acidic and the good bacteria die.
    • Our body fluids become acidic because our kidneys are busy in fight-or-flight mode and the filtering process is slowed.
    • The production of eggs in our ovaries is slowed or even stopped because our bodies have become acidic.
    • Our periods can become erratic or heavy because we are mineral-deficient.
    • We can experience painful cramps, excessive blood clots, back pain, and headaches.

Whew! And these are just some of the physical impacts and torture that stress pounds on our bodies.

From your point of reading this blog forward, I want you to make a promise to yourself to honor your body and its powerful connection with your mind and thoughts. Make a point every day to manage your stress and anxiety in healthy and positive ways.

Make self-care a priority instead of putting it on the back burner. Give yourself permission to slow down and breathe. Here is a list of things you can do:

    • Get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
    • Be sure you’re eating fresh, healthy foods. I’ve gone mostly organic and I feel great!
    • Practice yoga or meditation. If you really feel that you don’t have the time for it on a daily basis, try to do it once a week.
    • Say mantras and positive affirmations. You can do this anytime, anywhere.
    • Listen to your body and rest when it tells you to.
    • Take a calming, soothing bath once a week if you can.
    • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
    • When you feel that brain-fog set in, stop, step away, and take a short walk.
    • Get my Release and Focus Exercise.

We are in control of our thoughts and our actions. To put yourself in the best possible position for building a successful, thriving business and life you love, you must take care of yourself.

We can’t stop stress from occurring, but we CAN manage it in a healthy, positive way.

Emerge Empowerment Healthy Tips to Help You Feel Your Best

Whether you’re a mom, an online entrepreneur, have a corporate job, are single or married, or…let’s face it, a WOMAN, we don’t make ourselves a priority. We put everyone else’s needs and, yes, wants before our own. We very rarely, if ever, practice self-care. And then what happens…you know all too well…we are depleted, exhausted, and maybe even grumpy.

On the rare occasion when we DO finally make time to do something for ourselves, even if it’s small, often times, we feel amazing! And when we feel amazing, we also feel empowered and we show up as a better version of ourselves for those around us.

  • Life Overwhelm Life Overwhelm

This has been the phrase of my life lately. Transitions of any kind can be overwhelming. Life chomps into you and holds that bite…hard. And sometimes, the changes you’re trying to make to improve your life feel overwhelming too. You begin to wonder, “Should I be doing this?!” Before giving up…STOP. You matter. Be empowered. #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurs #FemaleEntrepreneurs #Entrepreneurship #Empowerment #Success #Business #GirlBoss #Leave9-5 #Leave9to5 #DebbieCromack Pin it for later!

Take a breath, settle your mind, and remember WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. Remember your reason.

By now you know what a typical day is for me. With 12-14 hours consumed by my corporate job, trying to sell close to 300 items on Craigslist, finding time to eat and sleep, getting daily chores and errands done, wondering when I’m going make the time to start on my empowerment coaching certification, caring for my mother when needed, trying my best to not neglect my boyfriend and my bunny (Nutmeg)…just thinking about all I don’t yet know about running a business and trying to figure it all out is…well…terrifying and most definitely overwhelming!

Sometimes, I’m so overwhelmed I simply stop…I get stuck…paralyzed because I have no idea what to do first.

I used to be the queen of prioritizing, making lists, and getting things DONE. But these days, I often feel immobilized. My mind is cluttered and chaotic, I have no idea what to tackle on my list, and I feel frantic. And it seems, just at that moment, technology goes bonkers on me and everything REALLY stops. My head drops into my hands and I want to cry…sometimes I even do.

Ladies, this is important…this is the most crucial time to tap into your mindset. Be mindful of your breath, slow your mind, and focus. Life will overwhelm us if we allow it to. The key is…don’t allow it to. You are the master of your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions. This is the time for self-care, being kind to yourself, and remembering your WHY. This is a good time for some meditation. When you give yourself a break and focus on the reason you’re making the transition you’re making, clarity comes easier. Think of your values…think of your beliefs…think of what you want the outcome of your transition to be. Focus on that.

Take a few minutes to visualize. This is a powerful tool. To manifest your desires, state them out loud and know that the Universe will provide…something. Maybe it’s a person, an opportunity, a chance meeting…something. It’s important to look for it. Visualize your life after the transition. Close your eyes; see and feel what it looks like and feels like. Keep your WHY at the center. Let it motivate you and guide you to managing your energy in the best way and on things that impact your WHY directly.

All of our “overwhelms” are different and we each have different tolerances. Remember not to judge your overwhelm against someone else’s. Your overwhelm is no more or less intense, frustrating, painful, etc. than anyone else’s. And your overwhelm is YOURS…it impacts you…and that’s okay. Just don’t let it take hold and control you or your life. Learn what to do about it so you can diminish it and keep moving forward.

Life moves on and time passes. Eventually, we find ourselves in a different point in life than where we were before. Keep working toward your WHY, always being true to yourself. Learn how to manage the overwhelm, making it less daunting, and hopefully find yourself closer to living the life you desire.

    You can manage your overwhelm.

Comment below and share what overwhelms you and how you manage that overwhelm.

  • Corporate America to Entrepreneur Surviving the Transition Corporate America to Entrepreneur

As I stumbled around trying to find my footing, I started to wonder if I am a fraud. I confessed this very thing to my business coach. “How can I empower other women, when I still feel quite lost? Am I being deceptive?” I asked. With a bright, wide grin and sparkle in her eye, she said, “No, Debbie. This is part of your journey as much as it is theirs.” You matter. Be empowered. #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #Success #Business #GirlBoss #Leave9-5 #Leave9to5 #DebbieCromack Repin it!

If you have read my story, you know a little about how I got to where I am now. As I stumble around trying to find my footing, I started to wonder if I am a fraud. I confessed this very thing to my business coach. “How can I empower other women, when I still feel quite lost? Am I being deceptive?” I asked.

With a bright, wide grin and sparkle in her eye, she said, “No, Debbie. This is part of your journey as much as it is theirs.”

As I pondered her response and let the words sink in, I thought, “Yes…and this is the best part of the journey, sharing it and living through it with others.”

My journey started long before the idea of Emerge Empowerment came to me. I have felt so lost and directionless for years. Yes, I have a corporate job (going into my 16th year at my current company) that pays the bills, makes me feel secure, and allows me to rely on no one but myself.

Unfortunately, it is killing me. It eats away at me every day, stealing happiness and fulfillment; leaving me without a sense of purpose and overworking me until I cannot even think straight.

But through the years, I found distractions from my misery—writing to decorating to real estate and more. The list goes on. And while I certainly love all of those things, I didn’t give myself fully to them; certainly not enough for a career.

I know now that I was searching…searching for something that would fulfill me and give purpose to my life.

When the concept of Emerge “emerged” (hee, hee), a fire lit up inside of me and I knew for sure it was not a “distraction.” It was my purpose, my calling, and I knew then and there that I had to make it a reality. “How??” became the question. I know nothing about running a business!

And so every day I flounder. Every. Single. Day.

For me, a typical day consists of 12-14 hours working at my corporate job; checking on and/or reposting close to 300 items listed on Craigslist from the event decorating business I used to have; hopping onto all of my social media to make sure I’m interacting, supporting, and responding to people; and trying to figure out WHEN I am going to have to time start working on my education for my coaching certification. Throw in daily/weekly chores and errands, trying to put energy into my relationship, and, oh, maybe find some time to sleep, eat, and exercise. It is daunting and exhausting. And now, figure out how to run a valuable and profitable business so I can leave my corporate job, help women learn how to empower themselves, and live the life I desire. WHAT?!?!

I am grateful to have merged life-paths with a fabulous business coach, an amazing financial coach, and some absolutely incredible women whom I know will have a positive impact on me professionally and personally. I learn so much each day. And the more I learn, the more I know I will build Emerge into a place where women want to come to get educated, feel safe, learn to care for and empower themselves. The Emerge Family will grow and I will cultivate it.

    Corporate America to Entrepreneur

I know this journey will likely be rocky and filled with challenges. I also know it’s going to be the best time of my life! Chances are, there are likely some of you out there going through your own transition. No matter where you are in your journey, I invite you to join me and let’s traverse this adventure together; supporting and encouraging each other at every step. So, this is my true story, along with the story of my hopes and dreams. And this I know…

    Together, we can do this!
