    The book is a collection of powerful stories shared by 18 women. Each of us were asked to share a pivotal moment in our lives, how that moment impacted the course of our lives, and how we conquered the challenges of that moment to thrive in our lives. Doing so, we knew we’d be opening old wounds and revisiting painful memories. Some of us had never even shared our stories…with anyone. So, there was moments of hesitation as to whether or not we should reveal something so personal and private. And every one of us decided that we should…for the main reason that sharing our story may help another person in this world have hope that they can overcome whatever their own life situation is and thrive as well.

    As part of the process, we had a coaching session with Kezia to really draw out the heart of our message. Though I had healed, forgiven, and moved on, the session with Kezia allowed me to gain deeper insight and a fresh perspective that I then poured into my chapter of the book. Reliving life experiences through memories and knowing how much I have grown and learned intensified my healing and reignited my passion for the work I do with the women I help.

     

    4 Steps to Leave Your 9-5

     

    Going through the process of writing down painful moments of my life and being able to release them again was both powerful and cleansing. I believe it helped me to more deeply connect with the women who come into my path who I am meant to help and to serve.

    Not only did I grow as a person, but I grew my sisterhood. Bonds were formed as this amazing group of women went from being strangers to being book-sisters and friends. We touched each other lives. We shared, cried, cheered, and supported one another so lovingly.

    Our lives are forever changed through participating in this incredible opportunity of co-authoring the book. And our collective reach of changing lives has had a ripple-effect we may never truly know the impact of. But together, our mission was strong…Women of Contribution paying it forward to impact 1 billion lives.

    It is such an honor to be connected with these phenomenal women and to be able to say that I am one on the first Ambassadors for the Women of Contribution. I am so grateful for having had this opportunity presented to me and to be part of something so life-changing and magical.

    Take someone’s desire to lose weight. They may hire a nutrition coach or get a personal trainer and start eating healthier and incorporating exercise into their daily routine. Then, they typically start to lose weight. They can see and feel the tangible results of their effort.

    With mindset work, results may not come as quickly as someone expects or in the form they anticipate. They may try manifesting and spend a week really manifesting hard for something specific. And each day, nothing happens. They’re not SEEING or FEELING the results of their effort. This is often when they give up and chalk it up as “woowoo.”

    Be patient my dear friend. 😊 And look to science for concrete evidence of the powerful, positive impact of mindset work. Improving your mindset takes time, repetition, and dedication. In order to truly change your mindset to the point where you change your life, have to commit to doing mindset work every day. You must make it a habit that becomes part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth and taking a shower.

    We used to think that our beliefs are formed through our youth and then they are set and basically “wired.” Science has uncovered that our minds are able to be rewired at any age. The key, however, is that we are the ones responsible for doing the rewiring. It is up to us to rewire, reprogram, retrain our minds in order to create the reality we desire.

    So, even the person who has endured the most horrific of life situations and thinks they are doomed for the rest of their lives has the ability to change the course of her life by dedicating herself to changing her mindset and her beliefs about the possibilities of the life she can have…the life she is worthy of.

     

    And so can you.

     

    In his book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself (get it HERE), Dr. Joe Dispenza says, “The gift of neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to rewire and create new circuits at any age as a result of input from the environment and our conscious intentions) is that we can create a new level of mind. There’s a sort of “out with the old, in with the new,” a process that neuroscientists call pruning and sprouting. It’s what I call unlearning and learning, and it creates the opportunity for us to rise above our current limitations and to be greater than our conditioning or circumstances.”

    In summary, we have the power to reprogram or retrain our minds to the reality we desire. You see, our minds look for repetition, not truth. The mind doesn’t know what “truth” is. It only knows the truth we tell it and we believe. If we believe we are successful in business, our minds will look for things in our environment to reinforce that truth. Similarly, if we believe we are a failure and that’s all we’ll ever be (based on an UNtruth from our childhood), our minds will again look for things to reinforce that.

    The power comes from the fact that changing that mindset is in our control. We have the ability to retrain our brain to what our truth is…even if, at the moment, it’s only what we desire it to be and not yet a complete reality.

    Think about it this way. When you recall a memory of an incredibly happy or exciting time in your life, the chemicals in your body react and you “feel” the “happiness” or “excited-ness” so similarly to when you were experiencing it in that moment. The same goes for a sad or terrible memory, your body physically responds.

    Now apply this to something in the future you are excitedly anticipating. Perhaps it’s a promotion or a vacation or something you’re looking forward to that elicits an actual physical response inside your body. You simply thinking about this thing impacts you physically. Thus, YOU have the ability to impact how you feel based on your thoughts. You control your mind.

    As we grow up, we learn how to put on masks that hide our true selves from the world as a way of protecting ourselves. In truth, putting on these masks only hurts us and keeps us stuck in our past identities, attaching ourselves emotionally to the past, but yet in our current lives. Meditation helps us to remove our masks and feel safe in the existence of our true selves, thus leaving behind our past and enabling us to create our future.

    It’s the emotions that we want to tap into here. When you focus your full and complete attention on the future you desire for yourself that you open yourself up to the emotions you will feel when you reach that desired future, you allow yourself to experience those emotions in the present and thus begin to attract to yourself, energetically, that which you desire.

    When you do this over and over and over…and OVER, you begin to reprogram or retrain your mind and change your present life through the emotions of your desired future because it will continue to look for things that reinforce your desires, your new truth. Make sense?

    Awareness.

    We can only change things in our life once we are aware of them. Only then, can we take action and make the changes that will truly impact our lives.

    Have you ever been around someone who is so completely UNself-aware?? You wonder how it is possible that they are not seeing what is so blatant.

    You know that person. You run into her while you’re rushing to get to a doctor’s appointment, which you let her know, and she basically stops you in your tracks and blathers on about pointless gossip. Or that person in the restaurant who you can hear from four tables away, who is apparently unaware that he is basically shouting and the loudest person in the restaurant. These folks are completely oblivious and UNself-aware.

    Sometimes we’re even blind to things going on in our relationships. Maybe it’s because we’re hopeful that things will turn around or get better. Maybe it’s because what we believe about ourselves is that we’re not worth any better.  Oh, those damaging stories we hold onto.

    To make changes in our lives and in our businesses, we have to be willing to SEE what is happening.

     

    I’m not saying this is going to be fun or feel good. It’s going to be uncomfortable and maybe even a little painful. This inward audit it a critical piece for you to do in order to be able to move forward in your business.

     

    Introverts Nail Your Message

     

    I want you to tap into your mindset to uncover your fears, identify and analyze your self-sabotage, and the bring forward the stories of your past from people who placed limitations on you that you believed to be true. The only way to address these things is to become aware of them, understand them, and release them.

    How do you do this audit, you ask?

    Step 1:

    Block out time on your calendar; I’d say start with half an hour and see how that feels. If you like to journal, grab your journal. If you’re more visual, do visualization.

    Step 2:

    Sit quietly and comfortably. Breathe in deeply and exhale. Do your best to quiet your mind and take yourself back to a time when someone you loved or someone of authority berated you or made you feel worthless. Remember their words. Remember how you felt. Visualize the situation. Write it down if you’re journaling. Allow those emotions to flood you. Embrace them…even if they are painful.

    Keep taking slow, deep breaths.

    You are older now, wiser, and a stronger version of the person you used to be. I want you to take a moment and realize that their words, the way they treated, came from their own fear…maybe even as a way to try to protect you in some way. Maybe because their dreams were squashed, they wanted to douse the potential they see in you. You may never know the reason, but you can forgive and release.

    Step 3:

    With these feelings swelling inside you. I want you to inhale a deep, cleansing, healing breath. And, as you exhale, I want you to envision the negative energy you feel as though it was a cloud of black smoke and blow it away…far, far away from you. Do this three times or as many times as you need to in order to feel your body let it go.

    Step 4:

    Sit peacefully…inhaling and exhaling slowly. Feel your soul…feel the freedom.

    In truth, these feelings never fully go away because the experience is part of you. Releasing them has to become part of your daily mindset work. Life happens and when it does, these fears, self-sabotage, and limitations get triggered. So, we have to continue to release them. And the more we work at it, the better we become at not allowing them to be our truth.

    This practice opens us up to creating our new truth, our new reality that is abundant with possibilities for a successful, profitable coaching business so you can finally quit your 9-5 job…and live a life filled with love and happiness.

    Now, with this self-awareness in mind, take a moment to audit your business. Really think about what’s not working and what is working. Sometimes we get so focused on doing, doing, doing, that we lose sight and become unaware that a change may need to happen in order for us to progress. Is there something you’re doing that is taking your time and energy, that you’ve been doing as part of your routine, that really isn’t moving your business forward? It may be time to stop doing that thing.

    Identity

     

    I never really thought much about my identity until it was about to change…dramatically.

     

    I worked in corporate America for over 25 years, 19 in my most recent company. Whenever I met someone new, the conversation often started with, “Hi, I’m Debbie!” followed by, “Hi, I’m {insert name}. What do you do, Debbie?” Proudly, I would respond, “I’m an Operations Manager at {insert big-name, well-known corporate company}” and receive an impressed nod of approval.

     

    My job, the company I worked for, became who I was…my identity. I worked 10, 12, sometimes 14 hours a day and often times on weekends as well. This wasn’t unusual. The amount of work was overwhelming and my counterparts worked similar hours. Spending so much of my life working my job, it was who I became as a person.

     

    And for a long time, I was proud of who I was and what I had accomplished in my life. I had earned my MBA, worked at a highly-valued and admired company, was in a long-term relationship with an amazing man, had a beautiful home and amazing friends, and life seemed pretty darn good.

     

    Sadly, with all I had accomplished, there was an emptiness gnawing at me. Something deep inside my soul was unfulfilled and I felt my life had no real meaning or purpose. I had a deep desire to help people, truly help people…something I definitely was NOT doing in my 9-5 job.

     

    After bawling my eyes out on the bathroom floor one too many times, I DECIDED I was done being an employee and I started my Emerge Empowerment, LLC business…as a side hustle. My business morphed and changed over time as I learned and niched and tweaked. It filled me with purpose and passion. I was finally doing work that lit up my soul.

     

    Admittedly, I was exhausted. With my corporate job being as demanding as it was, there was little time (or energy) to put into my business. And, as much as I loved it, it wasn’t far enough developed financially to pay my bills. And so, the straddle continued for about 2½ years.

     

    I believe our identity exists on a spectrum. You see, when it came to my career, there was the employee side of the spectrum and the CEO/entrepreneur side of the spectrum. For the bulk of my 2½ years, I was on the employee side. VERY SLOWLY over time, the needle on the spectrum began to move towards the CEO side. And when I finally made the DECISION that I was going to quit my job, I really started putting my toes into my CEO shoes. And once I made that decision, things in my business really started to shift.

     

    I’ve only had my feet fully in my CEO shoes as a full-time entrepreneur for just about two weeks and I know I still have a ways to go to truly FEEL my identity and I’m so ready for the rest of the journey.

     

    1)     Values

    One of the other things I found myself questioning along my identity journey was my values. Not my core values, but what I placed value on.

     

    Working for a fortune 100 company, I now realize I measured my self-worth against my job and the company I worked for. When it came to being my own boss, running my own business, my self-worth had to come from…ME. And when that realization struck me, I struggled…A LOT.

     

    I started to question my own value. I wondered if I would still get nods of impressed-approval when I told people what I do for a living. And then I wondered why I even wondered that! Why did it matter to me what others thought of me and my career? Did I somehow feel I needed their approval or permission to go after my dreams and desires? Could I even run a business? What if I’m not good enough? What if no one even wants to work with me? I have no idea what I’m doing! What is wrong with me?

     

    YIKES! This craziness kept my head spinning for quite some time.

     

    That was when I started digging…DEEP…into mindset work. And I’m so grateful I did.

    2)    Thoughts

    As I look back now, I see it all so much more clearly. I was allowing so many of my individual thoughts to get foggy and cluttered with fears. You know, those negative stories we play over and over and OVER in our heads. Stories that came from an interpretation of something that was said to you or about you when you were younger. Stories that weren’t true, but for some reason, you’ve always held onto them as being true.

     

    Yup, those are the thoughts that were ruling my mind. I allowed those pesky fears to sprinkle my thoughts for so long that they became my beliefs about myself, my worth, my value. And through that vision, I was nothing at all.

     

    And so, I decided to get acquainted with my fears. To understand what they were and where they came from. Why did I think so little of myself? Why did I think my worth and value came from being great at spreadsheets and putting together PowerPoint presentations? How did I come to place my self-worth in the hands of big-wigs who knew nothing about me?

     

    I dug. And I found pain and heartache…and answers.

     

    You see, when we step in our CEO-shoes, our self-worth and our value of ourselves has to come from US. And if you’ve always been used to it coming from others, this can be VERY confusing and difficult if your self-worth was never cultivated. When you have allowed your identity to be defined by someone other than you for the majority of your life, it can feel really scary to suddenly be the owner of your identity.

     

    3)    Beliefs

    When you keep repeating the same thoughts in your mind over and over, those thoughts form your beliefs. And your mind looks for anything and everything to confirm those beliefs. When those beliefs are negative in nature, no amount of strategy, no fancy technology system, no amount of free coaching is going to lead to your success as an online coach.

     

    I don’t say this to deter you. I say it to fuel you because here’s the thing…YOU are the master of your mind. YOU have the power to control and change your thoughts to SERVE you versus HINDER you. Your mind is so powerful, you just need to learn how to feed it with your new truths and reality.

     

    Here’s the most basic way I can explain this to you. Your mind only knows what it’s told, thus it only knows what YOU tell it. When you were little and learned how to tie your shoelaces, your mind didn’t know how to do it until you were taught and then you practiced until you knew how to do it so well that you no longer had to think about it.

     

    Introverts Nail Your Message

     

    Now you’re older and wiser. I want you to notice the thoughts in your head. How frequently are the negative? Your willingness to be aware and truthful is key. When you notice a negative thought, I want you to simply recognize it…without judgement or ridicule…reword it with a positive spin. I want you to create positive affirmations for yourself that you repeat throughout the day.

     

    When you make a habit of shifting your thoughts, you start changing your mindset. And when you change your mindset to the positive things you desire in life and the things you ARE capable of and worthy of, your mind, once again, looks for everything to affirm your thoughts and beliefs…thereby attracting those things to you.

    Take Action and Step In

    Now I want you to take ACTION!! Write down on paper and then read aloud WHO you identify as. If you’re feeling brave, share it in the comments below. Here’s an example to get you thinking…

    I identify as a successful Business Coach, the CEO of my profitable, successful business.

     

    I’m not a fake-it-until-you-make-it kind of person. I DO, however want you starting to move your identity from “employee” to “CEO.” Even if you don’t feel fully in your CEO-shoes just yet, I want you starting to ask yourself what thoughts would you-as-a-CEO have. What actions would you take as the CEO of your business? At least step in by putting your toes into your CEO-shoes. 😊

     

    When you’re straddling your 9-5 and running your business, your time is limited. I want you stepping more and more into your CEO-shoes. I want you thinking and acting from those CEO-shoes.     I know it. I’ve been there.

    Slumped on the bathroom floor, crying so hard that no sound was coming out of my mouth. Tears burning my swelling eyes. Pain in the pit of my stomach. Crying out, “Why?!?!”

Yes, working from home comes with some nice perks, like working in your jammies if you want and doing laundry during the day. It also comes with freedom and flexibility that are very tempting to slip into becoming unmotivated and maybe even lazy. Being able to work from home and be your own boss, building a successful business, takes discipline and self-motivation.

    And remember, being an entrepreneur is not a get-rich-quick kind of thing. When you make the decision to run an online business, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. You need to be committed for the long haul. Building the kind of business and life you want is an investment of time, money, effort, and energy. So, starting your “side hustle” while you’re still working your day job will give you a good taste of what’s to come. Because success does NOT happen overnight.

     

    2.     Get Your Finances in Order

    If you’ve been following me for a while, you know about the financial mess I made (and why) of my life in my youth AND how I’ve managed to pay off two huge loans and my credit card. You can check out THIS BLOG to read more about it. This life experience is what helped me realize the importance of getting your finances in order BEFORE you leave your corporate job.

    You want to create a profit and loss statement where you detail everything you’re spending on your business and everything you’re making from your business. Create a budget for yourself of where you want to invest your money. Think about things like hiring a coach, attending networking events, buying tools and systems to support your business, get a separate cell phone for your business (versus your corporate job).

    I always recommend starting three different accounts at your bank: 1) emergency fund, 2) short term fund, and 3) long term fund. At BARE MINIMUM, you want to create the emergency fund. This account will be where you build your nest-egg of at least 6 months’ worth of money that will allow you pay all of your minimum living expenses for those months when your income from your business dips. Because, you know, when you leave that steady paycheck behind, your income will likely vacillate, especially in the first few years.

    Use your corporate paycheck to 1) fund your business in the beginning and 2) create an emergency fund. Not making enough money in your business is one of the biggest things that can cause you to want to quit. Take steps NOW to alleviate the stress of not having enough money to pay your bills by building a stash of money.

    3.     Hire a Coach

    Because the online world and becoming an entrepreneur is so vastly different from working in corporate America, you won’t know what you’re doing in the beginning. And that’s okay, none of us did! 😊 As you’re thinking about your finances and setting yourself a budget for where your money is going, I highly recommend you work in money to hire a coach.

    A coach will help you learn what you need to know in order to build your successful, profitable business. I urge you to take your time in hiring a coach. This person is someone you want to follow for a while to get a feel for her, what she offers, her work ethic, her vibe, the results she’s gotten for her clients, and more. She is someone you want to resonate with, who you trust, and who you KNOW will help you propel forward in your business. You will be paying her money to do her job…make sure she’s the right person for you.

     

    4.     Create a Business Plan

    Your “side hustle” is a business. You want to treat it like one.

    Create a business plan. Be sure to include your…

    ·         “Why” behind your business.

    ·         Mission, vision, goals.

    ·         Ideal client / target market. What her pain points are. How you solve them.

    ·         Action plan for bringing income into your business: all the things you plan to offer (one-on-one coaching, group coaching, courses, books, retreats, webinars, podcasts, etc.), including their prices.

    ·         Best projections of your profit and loss statement, including budgeting for hiring a coach, hiring a virtual assistant (VA), attending events or masterminds, paying for systems, etc.

    ·         Strategy to make it all happen.

    Remember, your business is a long-term plan for your life, not a fantasy of fast, easy money. In the beginning, it’s a lot of work and will take dedication. Once you find your groove, you’ll begin to create the balance you so desire in your life.

     

    5.     Reprogram Your Mindset for Success

    I’ve saved this one for last because it is the MOST IMPORTANT.

    You did all the “right” things, what you were “supposed to do.” You went to college, got a “safe and secure” 9-to-5 job in corporate America with a 401K, pension, and benefits, maybe you even got your MBA like I did. You ALSO, ended up miserable, stressed out, unhealthy, having NO balance in life, and no social life because all you do is work your tail off to make someone you don’t even know rich.

    Finally, you started to wonder, “Is this really it? This is what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life?” Through the anxiety that has you feeling overwhelmed and suffocated every…single…day, you felt a pull to do something more with your life. You had a desire to truly help people and do work that is meaningful and valuable, to make an impact on this world.

    And so, you started your business. Like most of us, you likely started out as a solopreneur…you know, you are the CEO of your business…and you’re the assistant, and the technology person creating your website, and figuring out social media, and creating content for your clients, and trying to figure out how to be a master at marketing, and building relationships, and perfecting your selling skills…you’re doing it ALL.

    And yet…your business isn’t flourishing. The clients are non-existent…and so is your income. All you’re doing is investing with no return on your investment. You start to doubt yourself, your fear gremlins are biting at you, you wonder if everyone was right, that “you’re not good enough” and “you’ll never make a living being a coach.” You feel deflated, defeated, and you want to give up.

    Your fabulous business that you created to help others create the lives of their dreams while creating the life of your dreams feels like it’s slipping away.

    IT DOESN’T HAVE TO!!!

    What I learned on my own journey is that the mindset of a successful woman in corporate America is VERY different than the mindset of a successful female entrepreneur. Without creating a mindset ready to propel into growth and success, the rest simply doesn’t matter.

    Here Are Three Ways to Know if You’re Playing Small as an Entrepreneur

     

    1)       SELF-SABOTAGE

    A lot of times, when we make the transition from the corporate world to the online world, we feel like imposters. By that I mean that we often feel like either we don’t know what we’re doing or people will think we don’t know what we’re doing. We have certain skill sets and knowledge that helped us to do our 9-to-5 jobs very well and made us successful. However, those skill sets and knowledge don’t always transfer over to the online world. In fact, they probably have nothing to do with knowing how to be the kind of coach you want to be.

     

    So, what happens? Fear sets in. Your subconscious (and incorrect) beliefs tell you you’re “not good enough” or that people will think you’re a fraud. You’ll feel like you’re failing. And what you end up doing is hiding and making yourself invisible so no one will see your flaws.

     

    Yeah, self-sabotage will definitely bump you off your path to being a successful female entrepreneur.

     

    2)      COMPARISONITIS

    Ah, comparisonitis; a killer of success.

     

    When we get into the online space and realize we have a lot to learn, we do research…lots of research. We basically become human search engines. And we join Facebook groups with like-minded people, we follow people on Instagram who are in our coaching niche, we check out YouTube for “How to…” videos of becoming a successful entrepreneur, and we may even hop over to Pinterest to follow some of the top influencers in the field we want to coach in. All excellent data points and ways to learn and get ideas and inspiration.

     

    Also, fabulous ways to bring our fears to the surface and let those comparison gremlins come stomping on us. You may look around and think, “Ugh, there are so many women already doing what I want to do and coaching about exactly what I want to coach about.” Or, “My field is saturated with women who are already crushing it. I’ll never be noticed.”

     

    From there, you may go down the awful road of, “What was I thinking?! I can’t do this. I’ll never be successful as an entrepreneur.” What happened is that you compared yourself to people who have been in the online space for a long time and have built their businesses through years of hard work. You wonder how you’ll ever be “like them” and end up overwhelmed and completely deflated.

     

    3)       MINDSET

    To me, mindset is the biggest thing standing in the way of your success. According to William Wood, 90% of a person’s success is based on mindset. That’s HUGE!

     

    Yup, there are other steps on the path to success, but if your mindset is in the pooper, those steps don’t matter.

     

    You have to get your mindset knowing your worth and ready for growth.

     

    What took me a while to realize was that, while I was quite successful at academia and in corporate America, my mindset was not geared for success as a female entrepreneur. WOAW!!!

     

    I realized that my sense of value and worth came from a VERY different place in order to be successful in school and in my job. They came mostly from EXTERNAL sources.

     

    And in order to be successful as an entrepreneur, my worth had to come from an INTERNAL source…my mindset. This was NOT a concept I understood at the time.

     

    What I DID know was that I didn’t TRULY feel worthy of the successful business I was trying to build. I didn’t feel like I was ever going to be a good enough coach. I didn’t feel like I deserved the happy life I wanted. My ego was trying to “protect” me…but I didn’t know this back then. I just knew I felt completely unworthy of everything I wanted and was working so hard for. In truth, what I ended up learning, is that my ego was keeping me from all the things I desired.

     

    Maybe you’re feeling exactly the same way right now.

    For me, I had to take a step back and take a good…long…deep…painful…look into my soul to understand what was holding me back. In the online space, you’ve likely heard this referred to as having a “block” of some kind. I don’t like to think of it as a block. To me that’s like envisioning a brick wall standing in the way of my progress. A wall that I’ve basically given all my power to and expect someone to come along and tear down for me. Saying we have a “block” kind of gives us an excuse for not being able to move forward.

     

    I like to think of this “block” in terms of awareness instead. When we become aware, we own the responsibility for our own healing and forward movement. Yes, working with a coach is helpful, but ultimately, it is YOU who must do the work. And look, doing mindset work isn’t always easy. But, I can assure you, it’s sooooooo worth it!

     

    When your mindset is structured for growth and success, you will be unstoppable. Self-sabotage becomes a thing of the past. Comparisonitis fades away and you realize you don’t want to be like anyone else; you want to be fabulous YOU! And you recognize your worth and the fact that you can DO and BE anything you want in this life. Your empowerment is your solution and reprogramming your mindset (more scientifically known as neuroplasticity) is the key to unlocking the answers of how to unleash your success.

    Organic Toothpaste – Does it Work?

     

    When I first decided to “go organic,” I had no idea how much I needed to learn. I also realized I was probably going to have to decide just how deeply I wanted to go.

     

    When it came to eating out, was I NOT going to eat what was on the menu if it wasn’t organic? Hmmmm…I didn’t want to go THAT far. I was satisfied with eating the majority of my meals at home and eating organic. And when I went out to eat or stayed overnight with friends, I would just eat what they ate.

     

    When it came to health and beauty products, was I going to throw away everything I had, basically throwing out hundreds of dollars, and run out and replace everything with organic products, spending more money???? Hmmm…that didn’t sound like a good idea at all! Already having a mountain of debt, I didn’t want waste money.

     

    So, I decided that, once I was out of a product, I would then get an organic one to replace it and s…l…o…w…l…y migrate myself over. Now, that wasn’t all that easy. As with your typical products out there, some work with our body chemistry and some simply don’t. So, with the products I was using, I had to try quite a few to find something I LIKED that also WORKED.

     

    When thinking about my beliefs and my lifestyle and my habits, I knew I wasn’t going to be way over on the end of the spectrum where I refused anything that was not organic. For me and my life, that is simply not practical and I don’t want to limit or restrict myself in that way. I do my research (LOVE the Think Dirty app    – it’s FREE!), I think about the product, how I use it, and how passionate I feel about whether or not I want that product to be organic.

     

    By this I mean, if it’s something I’m rinsing or washing off of my skin or out of my mouth, I’m okay if it’s not organic, but do want it to be as good for me as possible with as natural of ingredients as possible. Now, if it’s something like an eye cream or a moisturizer that is going to stay on my skin all day, I do my best to make sure it’s organic.

     

    Two things to note: 1) Remember that a company can put the word “organic” in their name, but NOT be USDA certified organic. The only truly American organic products have the USDA organic seal. 

     

    I learned this lesson early on when I used products by a company who had “organic” in their name and they were NOT. 2) Very often, the organic standards in other countries are more stringent and restrictive than here in the USA.

     

    Something important to be on the lookout for in your health and beauty products, including toothpaste, is sodium lauryl sulfate, also known as SLS. SLS is an additive that allows cleansing products to foam up. What is unacceptable to my own tolerance is that SLS has been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation, and endocrine disruption.

     

    There are seven ingredients considered to be toxic that are often found in most non-organic toothpastes. They are…

    1.       Triclosan

    2.       Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

    3.       Artificial Sweeteners

    4.       Fluoride

    5.       Propylene Glycol

    6.       Diethanolamine (DEA)

    7.       Microbeads

     

    Again, I try not to be on crazy-ends of any spectrum and I know we’re all going to die from something. My perspective is that I plan to live my life doing my best to stave off things like cancer as much as I possibly can…or at least not encourage it. 😊 So, I do my research and decide what I’m willing to tolerate. I always recommend doing the same for yourself.

     

    When I started trying toothpastes, I was able to find organic ones and very lucky to find ones I LIKE that also WORK.

     

    I tried quite a few organic toothpastes, from gritty powders (like Dirty Mouth Organic Toothpowder) to more traditional pastes.

     

    I found two I like.

     

    My number 2 choice is from Zk’in Organics out of Australia. The flavor and texture are a bit different than I’m used to so that took a little adjusting. The taste isn’t bad, it just isn’t the typical mint flavor you’d find in most toothpastes. The texture is a bit more watery than a typical paste.

     

    My dental hygienist praised how well I take care of my teeth, so I have to believe it’s working well.

     

    This company is Australian certified organic and their products are made in Australia. They are cruelty free and Vegan. Their products are made without palm oil, fluoride, and SLS. Their packaging is recyclable.

     

    The reason I have it as my number 2 choice is simply because it ships from Australia so that makes it somewhat expensive.

     

    My number 1 choice is from RADIUS.

     

    I like both their Mint Aloe Neem and their Ginger Citrus Whitening. The flavor of the mint is, again, not your typical mint toothpaste flavor, but it is pleasant. I’m currently using the Ginger Citrus Whitening and the ginger citrus is very mild and not overpowering. The texture is more like a typical paste with little gritty bits in it that seem to do a good job scrubbing the surfaces of my teeth.

     

    I’m still getting rave reviews from my dental hygienist when I go in for my cleanings so that makes me happy.

     

    This company is USDA organic certified and ECOCERT (an organic certification organization, founded in France in 1991. It is based in Europe but conducts inspections in over 80 countries, making it one of the largest organic certification organizations in the world.) certified, cruelty-free, made in the USA, and women-owned (Woohoo!!). Their packaging is recyclable and their tube size is carry-on approved. Their products are formulated without xylitol (sugar alcohol used as a sweetener); GMOs; SLS; fluoride; saccharine; glutens; detergents; artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, or sweeteners. This list makes me feel pretty darn good about using their products. 😊
